«On The Verge…»

As always when dealing with high-quality Doom Metal, there’s one label that I look at, a Russian based Solitude Productions. These hard-working Russians barely ever release a bad album, and this one is no exception.

Mental Torment is another band from their area (Eastern Europe), more accurately – Ukraine. Already judging by their debut On The Verge… I’m convinced that this is another high-class band which performs a strong, professional and carefully mastered doom/death metal.
Some might say that the music these Ukrainian doomsters are playing is neither ground-breaking nor innovative, but the question is if one can expect that from this relatively young formation?! What they successfully deliver is a great musicianship, inexhaustible melodies, the right attitude and a bullet-proved concept.

This eight-tracker album offers this typical doom roaring, but also mainly melodic and melancholic leads, deep drums, light keyboards and a rich atmosphere of despair, melancholy and sadness. Most of the songs are of semi-length and it is definitely a good thing since they never really get boring. Therefore, more or less all of the songs are well-crafted and capturing the right mood of their music.

Thus, I think that On The Verge… is a great debut release that has everything to fit the taste of a sophisticated doom listener. Esp. recommended for fans of our own Saturnus, but also the likes of Mourning Beloveth, Officium Triste and similar doom acts.

Arra emlékeztet a kép, amit pl. régen a Junior Alfa nevű ifjúsági magazinban láttam kiskoromban.

A zenével viszont túl nagy baj nincs.

Jól befogadható, értelmezhető tétel, a végefelé akusztikus kiállással.
A dal lezárása is méltó a műfajhoz.

A belső része a kiskönyvnek bőven lekörözi a fedlapot.

Ukrainian Mental Torment is not some brutal death metal or dirty trash metal, as it could be easy to mistakenly think assume, but is instead doom and death metal with quite pleasantly melodic aspects, but also with dark and heavy touch. On the Verge… is this band’s first full-length album and only official release with an exception of a promo that was released in the year 2009.

Musically it reminds me of Theatre of Tragedy from the past years, more specifically from the Velvet Darkess They Fear era’s Theatre of Tragedy when the band was on it’s prime. Of course there are lots of differences too, like female vocals that don’t exist with Mental Torment and songs that do not rely that much on the ambience created by melodies. On the Verge… is a lot more heavier and darker too, but still I find lots of confluences regarding Velvet Darkness They. Especially the way both bands use coarse and raw vocals and the way melodies are presented feels the same on both cases. I don’t think this is in anyway planned, but just a simple coincidence and all the associations with these two records are just in my own head only. But I am mentioning this because once I noticed the similarities I really could not shake them off anymore.

The album sounds very good and the soundscape is very hefty. All of the instruments are recognizable, which makes it possible to hear all the good melodies with all their nuances intact. On the Verge… is all in all a pretty good package of doom metal, which greatest weakness is maybe it’s length and the fact that maybe the songs do not differ that much from each other. The composition work is pretty solid as a whole, but maybe there still could have been more variation.

Debut album from these 7 (!) Ukrainian youngsters, "On the Verge..." frist striked me with its awesome collage of paintings and sketches that make up what seems to be a storyline cover/booklet artwork. Reading the tracks titles I found out this is actually a conceptual album built on a diary of a salesman who eventually died in a shipwrek. Too bad the lyrics are not included in the booklet, they would have given the whole concept a much more powerful impact. Anyway, the music is some sort of melodic, emotional Doom Death Metal without many effects or other fireworks, just simple solw to mid-tempo rhythmed Doom Death on a layer of thin keyboards, and lead by a low tuned, guttural vocal. There's not much variation and I guess that's not even needed here, but in the end I still feel like something's missing. Definitely not a bad album, actually an enjoyable one, and if we judge by the fact this is their debut I can only foresee a bright future for this band.

Here we have the debut album of Ukrainian band Mental Torment for our judgment. It was released by “Solitude Productions”, so I guess nobody is surprised to find some kind of Doom Metal inside. This time it’s a mixture of Funeral Doom and Death/Doom, presented in a rather melodic way, but with a healthy dose of brutality. For me personally this music obviously has influences from such bands as Novembers Doom, a little bit of Mar de Grises and the Russian fellows Откровения Дождя. Though the music has rather melodic riffs, some solo like chords, but as I’ve already said, the music is dark enough, full of depressive melancholy, cold brutality.
“On the Verge...” could also be considered as an atmospheric album due to the Funeral Doom Metal parts in it. In general, the songs are created on both - Funeral Doom and Death/Doom - canons, so the whole album shares features of both genres. Though the release is really not bad, but that melancholy dominates here, which does not allow us to find anything very special (probably due to the whole mood of the release). I don’t see too much light in this album, though I doubt I should find any of it when the disc is titled “On the Verge...”
