The debut work by the German band featuring members of Crimson Swan and Ophis contains two epic compositions with a total duration of 18 minutes. The coolest mixture of traditional doom metal and doom-death with a touch of dark metal from the 90's compose the sound of this mini album, complemented by the atmospheric cover design that enhances the impressions from listening this powerful and vibrant music. A small flame lit in the darkness!

Formed in 2016 out of Hamburg, Germany comes the Doom/Death metal band VOIDHAVEN and their first EP entitled “Voidhaven”. The two song EP is a very well constructed piece of art. This is by far one of the best EP’s I have had the pleasure of reviewing since I started writing for Metal Temple. If you are a fan of MY DYING BRIDE I cannot stress enough how much you will enjoy this band. For a new band they absolutely killed it on this. I cannot wait to hear more from these guys in the future. What Jakob, Martin, Phil, Simon and Marcos have put together here will definitely be going into my playlist.

The first track which is almost nine minutes long called “The Floating Grave” starts off super depressing. You can feel the sorrow pouring out from the very beginning. But then out of nowhere comes the deep and evil sounding death metal. It’s truly a mixture that goes back and forth throughout the entire song. I had to listen to this song a few times just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It’s absolutely glorious.

The second song “Beyond the Bounds of Sleep” starts off pretty melancholic as well but it’s not overbearing with clean vocals. The song is pretty brutal as far as Death/Doom goes. The best part of the song is from 0:00 to 9:17. I really can’t put into words how amazing this EP is. It has a little bit of everything you would want in a Death/Doom metal album. You don’t have to take my word for it though. You can go purchase their EP on their bandcamp page and see for yourself.

Breathing the Core

The lyrics for the first track “The Floating Grave” are loosely based on a news item that Phil read. It was about the case of a woman who went missing. It was never discovered if she was still alive or what exactly happened to her. But in retrospective, it seemed pretty clear that she was abducted, since the last time anyone saw her, she was standing in a river with an unknown man by her side. The two had also been seen together before, walking through the town. Of course that sparked rumors of all sorts among the people, but in the end nobody knew the truth. We somehow liked the vibe of that story and moreover found it to be fitting for a new song we had just finished. We took the artistic liberty of adding a text-passage in the middle of the song that can be interpreted as either the river or the strange man speaking, luring the poor girl into her death. Apart from the guitar picking that can be heard throughout the song on clean and lead guitar (a very old idea of Phil’s that did not fit into any other song until then) the music of this track developed almost completely in the rehearsal room. It was one of the first pieces that the completed line-up wrote specifically for this band.

“Beyond The Bounds Of Sleep” on the other hand is based on one of the oldest fragments in the idea pool, dating back to a songwriting vacation in the later days of Crimson Swan (our precursory band) where Simon came up with the basic parts of the song. They were later complemented and the arrangement refined by all members of Voidhaven. Lyric-wise the song deals with the strains of life and having difficulties dealing with them. Most of us presumably know phases like that. The narrator lies in bed and his worries won’t let him rest. He desperately wishes to sleep (and possibly die) to find some peace. The different musical parts illustrate the different stages of his thoughts and feelings. The theme of longing to escape the burdens of existence (at least for a while) is a recurring one, also reflected in our band name.

German doomsters Voidhaven released their debut album on Solitude Productions and I listened and reviewed the record for this zine.

This is a debut record and the members of this band also play in Crimson Swan and Ophis. This record contains 2 longer songs in about a little less than twenty minutes duration. The music of Voidhaven can be described as the mixture of death and doom metal. But, the songs also have some gothic and dark metal influences from the 90-ies bands, so I swear to the dark that I could hear a bit of Diabolique and Cemetary in the song structure of both songs. The Floating Grave has rolling, almost ritualistic riffs, with growled deathly vocals on top of somber melody, but it evolves into beautiful clean vocals which only add to the atmosphere. The second song Beyond The Bounds Of Sleep is in my opinion better, it has more atmosphere and almost thich darkness. In that song we can again hear the nice interplay between the clean and growled vocals and the song doesn` t get boring and that is the main point in this genre of music besides creating the dark and almost touchable somber atmosphere. Great e.p., I wonder how the full length will sound like.
