The second work of the all-stars band including Kostas Panagiotou (permanent leader of Pantheist), Kris Villez (In Somnis), Lawrence van Haecke (Solicide) and new band member Geert van Mook, who held bass and also created album artwork! In the new album the musicians follow their concept and present a new portion of raw funeral doom metal based on gloomy pictures of Middle Ages and death theme. Heavy guitar riffs decorated by melodic solos and growl combined with clean vocals make the «Coronachs Of The Ω» diverse and allow to feel deeply its concept. The main decorations of the album are organ parts performed by Kostas Panagiotou which bring unique atmosphere to this monumental masterpiece.

Дебютный одноименный альбом этого бельгийского проекта, угрюмо нарезающего funeral doom, вышел на культовом для такой музыке британском лэйбле Aesthetic Death, а вот второй - уже на не менее культовом российском Solitude Productions. Собственно говоря, с учетом того, что в составе два участника Pantheist, то вопрос о культовости и самих WIJLEN WIJ тоже не стоит на повестке дня. В общем, очевидно, что данный диск в рекомендациях не нуждается. Замечу, тем не менее, что WIJLEN WIJ вполне удалось в рамках довольно узкого стиля создать вполне слушатебельный альбом и для далеких от эстетики funeral doom metal.

Первый одноименный альбом этой бельгийской группы выходил на английском лейбле Aesthetic Death аж в 2007 году, а вот новая работа уже вышла на российском значке Solitude Productions, с чем последних можно только поздравить, ибо получить такую команду шикарную команду в свой ростер - это как минимум круто. Для тех, кто в танке: в основе этого коллектива числятся такие небезызвестные личности как Костас Панайоту (PANTHEIST), Крис Виллец (IN SOMNIS) и Лоуренс ван Хеске (SOLICIDE). Естественно вся эта компания не могла записать посредственный альбом, который слушается практически на одном дыхании. Сырой и атмосферный funeral doom metal с мелодичными соло и партиями органа явно придется по вкусу всем поклонникам данного жанра, а в особенности фэнам WIJLEN WIJ. Да и оформление тут получше, чем было на дебютнике. К тому же первые 100 дисков изданы в формате Digipack. P.S. К сожаленью это был последний релиз этого проекта. Музыканты объявили о своём распаде спустя 3 месяца после выхода упомянутого диска.

Bez zbędnych wstępów i introdukcji zaczyna się najnowszy i chyba jednak jednocześnie pożegnalny album WIJLEN WIJ, którą to kapelę parę osób powinno kojarzyć, bo od paru lat pojawia się tu i ówdzie, proponując swoje własne spojrzenie na doom metal. Przesadą byłoby stwierdzenie, że to supergrupa, choć po prawdzie współtworzą (współtworzyli?) ją dosyć doświadczeni muzycy, a obok Krisa Villeza (IN SOMNIS), Lawrence’a van Haecke’a (SOLICIDE) oraz najmłodszego w gronie, basisty i twórcy grafik na nowy album, Geerta van Mooka mamy tutaj lidera PANTHEIST Kostasa Panagiotou i to jego obecność jest tutaj naprawdę istotnym elementem. Jego organowe partie dodają muzyce WIJLEN WIJ tego sakralnego (choć tak dalekiego od instytucji Kościoła, jak na przykład dokonania DEAD CAN DANCE) i czasem psychodelicznego klimatu, który w dodatku odmienia kierunek, w jakim by zmierzała reszta muzyków, gdyby pozostawić ją samym sobie. Bez tego instrumentu „Coronarchs of the Ω” brzmiałaby prymitywistycznie i mogłaby usatysfakcjonować głównie fanów na przykład RIGOR SARDONICOUS czy demosów WINTER, choć to wcale nie jest z mojej prztyczek skierowany do gitarzysty, basisty oraz perkusisty, bo tak właśnie bazowo brzmi WIJLEN WIJ i zapewne im o to chodziło. Zresztą organy nie są tu siłą przodującą non-stop i przykładowo ponad 17-minutowy „Die Verwandlung” opiera się na fundamentalnym, surowym funeral doom metalu (w końcu odkryłem wszystkie karty tego albumu! ;) ), gdzie na pierwszy plan wysuwają się mocno wysunięty bas, jednostajny, ‘trupi’ growl, a faktycznie ‘żywa’ perkusja i gitarowe riffy jedynie dopełniają całości, podczas gdy poruszające się na granicy fałszu solówki gitarowe i organowe ornamenty pojawiają się tylko i wyłącznie we właściwych momentach. To także swoisty trademark WIJLEN WIJ, bowiem ‘epickość’ muzyki tej formacji nie opiera się na symfoniczności i bogactwie brzmień, a na minimalizmie i średniowiecznej, archaicznej wręcz monumentalności i w tym doszukiwałbym się oryginalności tego krążka, który daleki jest od rozmachu niektórych produkcji doom metalowych, a przy tym właśnie w ten sposób ukazuje, że w tym gatunku można zmierzać w różne strony. Jeśli kogoś nie bawi rozbudowana w powtarzający się sposób, doom metalowa formuła „Die Verwandlung” czy psychodelicznie brzmiące „Laying Waste To the City of Jerusalem”, to może spróbować zmierzyć się z krótszym i bardziej melodycznym (oczywiście na swój chorobliwy sposób) utworem „Boreas” lub bardziej tradycyjnie pojmowanym funeral doom metalem w „A Solemn Ode To Ruin” i „From the Periphery” (w nich pojawiają się też wytęsknione przez wielu czyste wokale i chóralne zaśpiewy), ale ogólnie nie jest to pozycja skierowana dla tych, co lubią mieć wszystko podane na tacy i oczywiste w swojej postaci.

Belgium’s own little known (unfortunately) all-star group, Wijlen Wij, are apparently riding the, not new, but continuing trend of incorporating psychedelic prog rock into their metal mix with their newest, and second, full length album, "Coronachs Of The Ω". Wijlen Wij, Flemish for We, Deceased, are a atmospheric funeral doom band at heart but lava lamp transfixed hippies reside deep within their psyche and souls. Effectively transforming what can easily becoming a rather boring and tiresome style of music (in the wrong hands even worse) into something so spellbinding and exciting that you find yourself lost in time and space alike.

This super-group is steeped in doom richness and heritage, with Kostas Panagiotou of Pantheist and ex-Crippled Black Phoenix on guitar and keys, Kris Villez from In Somnis and ex-Pantheist behind the kit, Lawrence van Haecke coming from Solicide to hold down the microphone (growls and cleans alike) and new member Geert van Mook added to the assortment, whom dominated the bass and also astounded with the amazing album artwork. Panagiotou’s key touches with the keys this time around seems to mainly include what sounds to be a real pipe organ, no synths here. Well, except when there are but the organ is real. A touch that compliments the deep dark textures Wijlen Wij’s progressive funeral doom projects.

Oh, what a glorious sound they do project, those deep, dark and heavy atmospheres intermix and intermingles with touches of enlightenment, brightness and light to create the most interesting and encompassing funeral doom to ever exist. Because at the heart of it all, Wijlen Wij is a funeral doom band when all is said and done. A funeral doom band that is not afraid to progress and expand upon the base that has already been laid. A base that resembles early Paradise Lost mixed with The Ruins Of Beverast, slow, rumbling, deathly doom that rattles your insides. A base which now has the churning progressive sludge of Mouth Of The Architect sprinkled in along with a smattering of progressive psychedelia ala Pink Floyd and/or King Crimson to compliment to founding sounds of the band. Now, these new elements never overpower the occasion but rather are just used as flourishes to enhance the overall experience of it all for you and me to enjoy.

An experience is exactly what "Coronachs Of The Ω" is, sixty-one minutes, forty-three seconds of slow moving physiologically altering movements split into five wondrous tracks. Tracks that morph and evolve slowly only to decay and devolve back again at a pace equal to before. Wijlen Wij have accomplished here what many groups before have made a mess of, they have taken their foundation, their homestead and renovated the interior to fit their own personalities while still being able to make it all cohesive and appealing. Coronachs Of The Ω is an outstanding album, a moving album, one you have to feel, experience, even live to full appreciate but once you do the reward is beyond compare in the end.

After reading the 2 catastrophic reviews on Metal Archives and laughing my ass of after reading this statement "You know you suck when you fuck up Funeral Doom", I thought the two guys writing them were just messing around and it wouldn't be possible for a Solitude release to be as awful as that, but after spinning this CD for a couple of times I have to say I found it pretty disapointing as well, not catastrophic but rather disapointing. Unfortunately the Belgian trio chose to use the most common and at the moment boring / uninspired guitar riffs, drum patterns and vocals they could, the sound is below the standard Solitude Prod. quality and the compositions are trying too much to add as many influences and elements as possible in a whole that is supposed to be monotone and oppressive, and the final impression, or at least my final impression is of a band that has capable musicians but who are unable to form and sound like a group, a band with no real horizons and targets. 5 tracks, more than an hour of playing, but a disapointing release that I'm sure will be rated below acceptable by Funeral Doom maniacs.

Sept ans après son premier album, et quatre ans après le split Unveiling the Signs, la formation belge Wijlen Wij est de retour pour un second opus intitulé Coronachs of the ?, sous l'égide du label russe Solitude Productions. Si l'on trouve toujours au sein du groupe Kostas Panagiotou (Pantheist), Kris Villez (In Somnis) et Lawrence van Haecke (Solicide), on notera que Stijn van Cauter (Until Death Overtakes Me et une pléthore d'autres projets) n'en fait plus partie, un départ qu'on pourrait voir, à tort ou à raison, comme à l'origine du relatif changement de personnalité qu'a subit la musique du groupe.

En effet, si sur le fond Wijlen Wij officie toujours dans le même style, ce nouvel album présente un certain nombre de nouveautés qui si elles ne manquent pas forcément d'intérêt risquent de ne pas plaire à une partie des fans du groupe. Là où le premier album proposait un Funeral Doom sombre et pessimiste où les passages plus mélodiques, bien que présents, restaient assez sobres et jouaient un rôle relativement limités, Coronachs of the ? met au contraire en avant une atmosphère bien plus lumineuse, mélancolique et émotionnelle.
L'exemple le plus flagrant de cet état de fait est clairement "...boreas", le titre ouvrant l'album: dès les premiers instants, la tonalité étonnement positive des mélodies et des nappes d'orgue a de quoi surprendre l'auditeur ayant apprécié le premier album du groupe, le dépaysement étant en outre de plus en plus grand au fur et à mesure de la progression de la chanson, celle ci se terminant par une montée en intensité très maitrisée dont les mélodies risquent cependant de paraître étonnement niaises à certains. L'arrivée du chant clair est également à remarquer, tant son utilisation a changé depuis l'album éponyme. En effet il est ici très doux, voir même romantique, et est très éloigné des accents plus liturgiques et torturés que pouvaient proposer des titres comme "L'Anathème" ou "Bridges". De même, l'assez réussi interlude au piano qui arrive aux alentours de la quatrième minute est bien loin des notes de claviers glauques et obsédantes d'un morceau comme "Wijlen Wij".
Or, si "...boreas" est clairement le titre au sein duquel ces éléments sont les plus développés, il n'est pas le seul à les inclure, des morceaux comme "A Solemn Ode to Ruin" ou "From the Periphery" les comportant également à des degrés divers.

Cela étant, cette métamorphose vers un Doom plus beau, métissé et accessible n'est pas complète. En effet, des morceaux comme "Die Verwandlung", qui bien que relativement mélodique conserve une réelle sobriété à ce niveau là, ou "Laying Waste to the City of Jerusalem", dont les quelques accélérations pourront faire penser à "Falling Stars", sont porteur d'une âpreté et d'une dureté qui rappellent plus le premier album et sont à ce titre plus à même de séduire certains. Cependant ils ne sont pas totalement satisfaisants: outre un travail de composition légèrement moins intéressant, bien que sans doute plus dense, on pourra regretter le fait que le son des guitares soit bien plus conventionnel que sur le premier album. De plus ils souffrent d'une production peu adaptée, qui tranche étonnement avec ce à quoi les sorties du label nous avait habitués.

Au final, l'album souffre d'une identité légèrement bâtarde, certains passages étant trop gentillets pour une partie des auditeurs, d'autres trop rudes pour les autres. Les personnes appréciant ces deux aspects auront par contre de quoi être satisfaites, l'album étant tout de même très varié et offrant pas mal d'idées différentes, à défaut d'être vraiment parfait. Le groupe ayant splitté peu après la sortie de l'album, il est malheureusement peu probable qu'il nous offre un jour un successeur à ce Coronachs of the ? , qui aurait pu adopter une ligne directrice plus tranchée...

Kostas Panagiotou ismert alakja a doom metal szcénának. A Pantheist mellett, mivel ez egy zeneileg szélesebb skálán mozgó zenekar, egy a funeral doomhoz hívebb formációt is működtet, és ez a Wijlen Wij. Egy éjfekete album már megjelent 2008-ban, később egy split Unveiling The Signs címmel, s idén a második lemezt is tető alá hozta társaival Kostas.
A zene nem változott számottevően, a Coronachs Of The Ω egy elődjéhez hasonlóan mogorva doom opus, azonban Kostas kellő mennyiségű dallammal ruházta fel a vigasztalhatatlan hangulatot árasztó hosszú szerzeményeket. A gitárjáték, a riffelési stílus is felismerhető, de főleg a sokszor orgonához hasonlító billentyűsök hangszíne ad egy karaktert a Wijlen Wij melankolikus doom eposzainak. Az ének jellemzően hörgés, de dallamokra is van precedens – ilyenkor a Pantheist neve is eszembe jut.
Alapvetően egy minimális eszközkészlettel bíró zene ez, de az A Solemn Ode To Ruin… a maga 17 percével a legváltozatosabb tétel – még egy gyors részt is tartalmaz.
A funeral doom pőre, szikár felét képviseli a Wijlen Wij, de érzéssel előadva, tartalommal megtöltve, zeneiséget felvonultatva.

“Solitude Productions” presents yet another Funeral Doom release, but this time from Belgium. “Coronachs of the Ω” is quite an eclectic attempt to expand the boundaries of this genre by introducing various progressive, modern elements. However, it has already received poor ratings. That’s a bit puzzling since nowadays novelty and originality is encouraged, e.g. even We all Die (Laughing), who combined Progressive Metal with DSBM, were described as “an absolutely perfect Ethereal masterpiece”. So why didn’t Wijlen Wij get similar feedback for their experimentation? The main reasons were highlighted by other reviewers - the music is analogous to songs from the last Anathema album and a lack of emphasis on bass guitar made everything sound psychedelic and hippy-like. Also, it was mentioned that there was a lack of atmospheric depth, the true sound of Doom Metal due to the musical diversity. All of these observations are spot on and from my point of view, the album was once again too long, the compositions simply weren’t engaging; the musicians performed in an insincere, unprofessional, almost sterile manner. Although ex-members of Pantheist have years of experience, they inefficiently contributed to “Coronachs of the Ω” thus it sounds like a release of a recently established band that hasn’t found its style yet. Frankly, I even started to think that it was badly produced just to attract attention by provoking negative reactions. This situation reminds me of Lulu, whose music at first seemed like an unfortunate attempt, but later made you think if it all wasn’t done on purpose. Wijlen Wij’s album was either produced out of boredom and simple necessity or for the sake of a provocation.

Dans le monde musical, certains groupes marquent les esprits malgré leur courte durée de vie. C'est le cas de Wijlen Wij qui a fait couler beaucoup d'encre avec son premier opus éponyme sorti en 2007. Il faut dire que le groupe belge réunissait des grands noms de la scène Doom metal : Kris Villez (ex-In Somnis, ex-Pantheist), Kostas Panagiotou (Pantheist entre autre), Lawrence van Haecke (Solicide) et Stijn van Cauter (Beyond Black Void, The Ethereal, ex-Until Death Overtakes Me, ex-In Somnis et tant d'autres). Autant dire que le line-up était tout simplement parfait pour étancher notre soif de musique lourde et pesante.

Malheureusement, en 2012, Stijn van Cauter décide de ne pas poursuivre l'aventure, départ dont le groupe ne se remettra jamais. En mai 2014, la formation nous annonce la fin de leur histoire, mettant un terme à 12 ans d'existence, marqué par un son et un apport indéniable à la scène de Funeral Doom. Ce "Coronachs of the Ω" sonne donc comme un adieu, le quatuor ne pouvait pas nous quitter sans nous laisser un souvenir impérissable.

Et je peux vous dire que la tâche est rude car, même si le premier album date de 2007, sa sortie avait eu l'effet d'une véritable bombe, secouant la scène Doom metal. Véritable monument pour certains, à classer au Panthéon des œuvres de Funeral Doom pour d'autres, les superlatifs pour qualifier ce "Wijlen Wij" ne manquent pas sur la toile. Les belges vont-ils réussir à nous impressionner une nouvelle fois ? L'écoute de ce "Coronachs of the Ω" à l'artwork plus que minimaliste va rapidement nous le dire.

N'attendez pas de Wijlen Wij une quelconque pitié pour vos petites oreilles, ici, on va droit au but. Premier riff, premier râle, et déjà, nous cherchons à nous accrocher aux notes de l'orgue pour ne pas sombrer. Cette présence rassurante, qui a donné son nom au style Funeral, me rappelle les premiers albums de piliers comme Skepticism ou Thergothon. La voix gutturale se situe entre le râle et le murmure, apportant une certaine profondeur à la musique. Je reste sceptique sur la voix claire et narrée ("Boreas", "From the Periphery"), mais son introduction permet un changement de couleur indéniable au paysage.

Ce "Coronachs of the Ω" est véritablement riche musicalement parlant, que ce soit par les différents timbres de voix utilisés, mais aussi par l'ajout de parties au piano, à la guitare sèche ("Boreas"), d'un jeu entre la guitare et l'orgue ("Die Verxandlung"), ou encore par des changements de tempos assez déroutants ou des moment très minimalistes ("Laying Waste to the City of Jerusalem"). Les belges possèdent une palette de couleur très importante, ce qui permet de transmettre de nombreuses émotions tout au long des morceaux, dont la durée est suffisamment grande pour que chaque sentiment soit développé à sa juste valeur.

Alors bien sûr, ce "Coronachs of the Ω" n'est pas parfait, un peu répétitif parfois, des choix au niveau des voix pas toujours convaincant, mais rarement maladroit. Cet album reste une très belle façon de nous dire adieu. Forcément, nous reverrons ces hommes de talent dans d'autres formations, mais je regrette tout de même cette collaboration qui m'aura marqué comme tout fan de Funeral Doom qui se respecte.

Furcsa ellentmondásnak hathat egy metal hívő szájából, hogy irtózik a temetésektől, a haláltól. Nekem túlságosan sok is jutott ki ezekből az elmúlt években, volt hogy havonta. Nem tudok kijárni a temetőkbe, mert ellenérzést vált ki belőlem a föld alatt oszló emberek jelenléte. Soha nem láttam értelmét egy olyan terület meglétének, amire virágokat dobálnak és időnként kötelező jelleggel cserélgetnek, de az az érzés szintén ott van a top 10-ben, amikor gyertyafényben kell megtartani a halottak napját a sötét, mégis üdítően friss földszagot hozó őszi szélben.

Ez az ellenérzés, borzongás egyes lemezek esetében viszont előnyt jelent (legalábbis azoknak, akiknek hozzám jut el a lemeze)a fekete zene befogadásában, átérzésében, egyfajta katarzist szülve, amit esetleg másnál nem tud megindítani. Ennek ellenére sem sikerült igazán megszeretnem a belga Wijlen Wij nevű projekt második lemezét. A Pantheist, In Somnis és Solicide tagokból összeálló csapat 2002-ben kezdte a kripták hangjainak gondos feljegyzését, első, egyben bemutatkozó kiadványuk pedig a zenekar nevére keresztelve 2007-ben jelent meg. Ugyan nem váltottak világot vele, de ultra lassú, búskomor futamai máig rendszeres hallgatnivalóvá avatták a stílus kedvelői között. Első nekifutásra a Coronachs of the Ω hasonlóképpen megfogott, a HP-n még lelkesedtem is iránta, de rövid időn belül kikopott a lejátszóból és rájöttem, hogy nekem ebből valami már hiányzik. Az a gyomorfacsaró, görcsölő érzés, amit elsőre sikerült megidézniük, kormos lélekcsemegévé alakítaniuk egyszerűen sokkal gyengébbnek hat, a fájdalom most kevésbé erőteljes. A dalok gyakran ötlethalmazok inkább, nem állnak össze egésszé, rendezett meneteléssé, amit elvárhatnánk. Több a fenséges pillanat, kevesebb a dohos zaj, ezért sokat veszített hangulatából. A rövidebb tételek viszik el a lemezt, mint a kezdő ...boreas, amiben a tiszta énekdallamok igazán magasra tudnak repíteni a hörgés mellett, még ha az alapító énekes (és egyébként más zenekarokban más-más hangszereken játszó) Stijn Van Cauter már ott is hagyta eddigre a bandát és helyét a kevésbé minőségi hanggal megáldott Lawrence vette át. Ehhez képest a Die Verwandlung 17 perce már nagyon álmosítónak hat. A szintén rövidebb, Laying Waste To The City Of Jerusalem megint a fordulatosabb vonalat erősíti, le sem tagadhatva rokonságát a Pantheist örökséggel. A záró kettős pedig ismételten izgalmak nélkül legördülő, átlagos funeral doom szerzemény. A debütálásban számomra szinpatikus régimódi, poros hangzás ezekben a dalokban már nem érvényesül megfelelően, mert az ezeket idéző riffek száma is jócskán kevesebb és ötlettelenebb. Időnként meg kifejezetten unalmassá is tud válni. Érdemes még felfigyelni a borítóra, ami elsőre nem tünik túl érdekesnek, pedig nagyon finom részletek vannak benne és a hangulathoz tökéletesen passzol.
Meglepően közepes lemez a műfaj egykor szebb napokat is megért, fanatikus művelőitől tehát az új Wijlen Wij. A funeral doom szerelmeseinek a szigetek módjára szétszórt izgalmas pillanatok tudnak némi örömet okozni, de a jól induló formáció ezzel a lemezzel valószínűleg önmagát is elföldelte, mivel azóta megszűnt aktív projektnek lenni.
