Long-awaited album of a Moscow band represents their first officially issues record. Having performed a number of successful gigs in Moscow and other cities the band fixed their musical experiments at this EP. Thus, «Silverhoney» is the first chapter in the band history telling about its becoming and creative experiments varying from doom metal to post metal.The issue includes a CD-R with professional printing, a booklet, a flyer and a hand-numbered certificate with unique copy number (edition is limited to 100 copies). It is packed in a mini-LP-sleeve of solid cardboard with original Art of Silence series appearance.

Московский квинтет под вывеской Illuminate the Silence на мини-альбоме «Silverhoney» ударился на новые территории экспериментов в жанрах doom и post metal, далеко уходя за эти обусловленные границы. Надо сказать, что это смелый поступок, так как, наверное, никто еще в среде российской экстремальной сцены не экспериментировал настолько шизофренично. Во-первых, вокал разгуливается на нескольких сторонах, начиная от чистого до скримингового и заканчивая легким гроулингом. Во-вторых, присутствует слияние нескольких оттенков различных элементов джаза и даже фанка, особенно остро это ощущается в заключительной композиции «Sunday Monster», которую можно заслуженно считать верхом экспериментального искусства. Однако «Воскресный монстр» оказался незаслуженно коротким, хотелось продолжения в том же духе. А если бы весь релиз был выполнен в подобном ключе, то диск можно было бы с легкостью назвать фаворитом среди данного направления тяжелой музыки и зачислить его в первые ряды своей коллекции.
Не понравилось в этом релизе чрезвычайно резкие скачкообразные переходы в рамках каждого трека, никак не получается уловить мысль музыкантов, мне кажется, что она очень резко теряется с регулярным постоянством на протяжении всего EP. В заглавной композиции «Silverhoney» эта проблема обостряется, хотя сам по себе трек весьма хорош, но все же перенасыщенность всем подряд плотно оседает в сознании. Воспринимаются лишь отдельные фрагменты, не хватает соединительных креплений между акустическими передачами, скоростными гитарными риффами, витиеватой ритм-секцией и мелодичными сгустками, в полной мере появляющихся в четырех представленных произведениях. К вокалу претензий не имеется, так как он по-настоящему, душевно, с проникновением вписывается в каждый отрезок трека, в нужных местах и в необходимом количестве. Несмотря на, казалось бы, разношерстную подборку и совершенно не подходящих друг другу по жанровым составляющим композиции, диск имеет свои завязку, кульминацию и развязку. В общем и целом, следовало бы послушать полноценный альбом группы, чтобы раскусить всё то, что представлено в головах музыкантов в большем объёме, поэтому сложно рекомендовать начать знакомиться с Illuminate the Silence именно с «Silverhoney». В любом случае, их музыка не поддаётся классификации, поэтому трудно посоветовать релиз к прослушиванию, так как он абсолютно точно на любителя данной жанровой непредсказуемости. Она обрела форму болванки «с заводской накаткой, буклетом, флаером и карточкой-сертификатом с индивидуальным, проставленным вручную, номером» (тираж диска – 100 копий). Так что теперь, если интересующиеся проявят расторопность, они ещё смогут, может быть, урвать себе кусочек радости и веселья.
Которого, впрочем, в музыке Illuminate The Silence не много, потому как их музыка скорее ориентирована на дэт-дум, поданный на блюде с нестандартными для жанра украшениями, вроде фанковых партий баса в песенке “Sunday Monster”. Не зря выпускающий лейбл обзывает это творчество «экспериментальным металлом». Здесь действительно много смен темпов, ритмов, изломов мелодий и настроения; от чистоголосого нытья вокалист может перейти к агрессивному рыку, а музыканты могут удариться в резкое крошево после игры с воздушными змеями мечтательных мелодий и фокусов на грани фола с акустическим звучанием и чистым гитарным звуком. Переходы, на мой взгляд, слушаются весьма убедительно; образ плохо сшитого зомбака, страдающего перепадами настроения, если и являлся мне, то очень редко, а иногда ловкость ходов даже способна удивить. Правда, не могу не признать, иной раз всё же хочется укоризненно покачать головой. Чаще всего такое желание появляется во время чистоголосых партий певца Кирилла, совместившего в своём вокале ехидную и в то же время какую-то пионерскую гнусавость с хипстерской монотонностью.
Музыканты этой, без сомнения, перспективной бригады научились играть. Теперь им нужно проявить упорство, чтобы показать на, я надеюсь, скором полноформатнике хорошее композиционное мышление. Ну и над вокалом нужно нехило поработать, если ВИА хотят ориентироваться на гетеросексуальных любителей металлической музыки, а не на странных модников в узких штанишках; хотя это, конечно, тоже достойная и многочисленная аудитория. Дождёмся альбома и увидим, куда заманит судьба этих интересных «иллюминатов».

Érdekes kiadvány a moszkvai Illuminate The Silence névre hallgató zenekar EP-je. A MySpace oldalukon (mást nem találtam...) a megjelenés kapcsán írja az ötös, hogy ez a 2008-as felvétel a banda 2007/2008-as munkásságát láttatja, amikor is még az önálló stílusuk keresése, kialakítása volt a céljuk. Azonban, mivel ez is része a csapat történetének így örülnek a megjelenésnek, viszont azt sietnek leszögezni, hogy itt még a kezdetekről van szó, amikor a doom/death és post-metal stílusjegyeinek felhasználásával próbálkoztak egyénit, különbözőt alkotni a kortárs csapatoktól. Érdekes elgondolkodni, mennyire is sikerült.
Amit én ezen a négy számos, majd' 25 perces korongon hallok, nem tűnik annyira egyéninek (hogy a felvétel készítésének idején mennyire lett volna az már ki tudja). Röviden: van itt doom/death á la My Dying Bride és korai Paradise Lost módra (bár inkább az MDB dominál), aztán van benne egy csipetnyi - talán kissé több, rendszeresen felbukkanó - System Of A Down. Hogy csak a legjellemzőbbeket vegyük. Meg azt hiszem a Neurosis emlegetése sem nagy mellényúlás velük kapcsolatban.
Szóval, ahogy a nyitó My Preacher (Had Black Eyes) érdekes elegye a doom/death-nek és az itt-ott felbukkanó SOAD-os énektémáknak.
A címadóban fellehetők még a korai Amorphis-tól ellesett megoldások.
Számomra a záró Sunday Monster adott a legtöbbet, talán azzal, hogy a másik három hat-hét perces nótával ellentétben ez valahogy dalközpontúbbra sikerült. Viszont ha ez jelzi az újabb irányt, akkor - bár ez ma már nem számít túl egyéninek - azzal szerintem lehet mit kezdeni. Mondom ezt annak ellenére, hogy manapság sem ez a fajta doom/death, sem a post-metal nem áll az érdeklődésem középpontjában, így nem is mondanám, hogy túlságosan képben vagyok az ebben a stílusban mozgó csapatokkal kapcsolatban. Szóval lehet, hogy ez, illetve ha a terveik szerinti post-HC irányba való terjeszkedés valami jót, sőt akár valami újszerűt fog eredményezni.
Az egyéni teljesítmények egyébként már itt is rendben vannak, a dalszövegek eléggé befelé fordulók, lélek boncolgatók. A hangzás nem szakítja le a fejet, de bőven élvezhető.
A csapat mostanában új felvételen dolgozik, ami talán hamarabb napvilágot lát, mint ez a mindössze száz(!) példányban megjelent EP. Így a nyomott CD-R-en megjelenő, négy oldalas, nem túl informatív (a szövegeket azért tartalmazó) borítóval, egy kis matricával és egy kézzel számozott bizonyítványt a birtokolt példány sorszámáról (ezt én nem kaptam) tartalmazó kiadványról ma már inkább kedvcsináló kordokumentumként van értelme beszélni. Így a pontozás sem lehet objektív véleményem szerint, tehát ez most csak hat.

The “Silverhoney” sleeve itself is very different in terms of colour, and this made me look at this album in a different way. Experimental metal always gives you a chance to see something new. Illuminate the Silence’s is a band from Moscow and their 4 song EP “silverhoney” is a special treat for fans who expect some progressive intent in the music. The opener “My Preacher” gives us an insight to this album. It starts with a song structure of death metal intro and the vocals begin with a few whispers, reminiscent of the old Russian metal band Mentalhome. The style is a bit similar, but there are many variations in terms of vocal style. You can find clean and death vocals throughout the song. It is a mid paced song with a lot of melody.
The main core of Silverhoney’ EP is that the music is progressive, and therefore they try their hand at experimenting with various kinds of music, but all on a progressive basis, which allows them to do everything and anything. “The silver honey” song starts with thick black vocals with the guitars soaring slowly. The twin attack of guitars gives this song a unique texture. The drumming is pretty slow and timed very well. As the song moves on, the pace picks up and variations in the song structure starts. “The Weary Oblivion” is an amazing track as clean vocals take charge initially, with black vocals following. The unique vocals have given this song a special appeal; worth repeated listens.
I must admit that their approach is quite interesting and intriguing at the same time. Progressive Metal usually tends to sway either towards doom or death; both of which can be very dangerous if not controlled properly. Thankfully, Silverhoney EP gets this balance right. This EP stands out in its duration – it is relatively quite long for four tracks. This enables Illuminate the Silence to experiment with the compositions and bring in myriad variations. The production on “silverhoney” EP is really good. I hope Illuminate the Silence will continue this in their future releases also. Overall this EP is worth listening to and will not disappoint metal fans!!!

Existem bandas que tentam fugir do trivial e incorporam elementos ou até mesmo ritmos novos em seu material. Veja o caso desses russos do Illuminate the Silence, que acrescentaram em seu doom metal elementos progressivos e até uma pegada “funk” em uma faixa.
Esse ep abre com My Preacher que segue numa linha do Amorphis com os vocais sendo cantandos nas frases da guitarra. Outra coisa que me chamou atenção foram os vocais limpos do cidadão que me lembraram os de Ville Tuomi, que participou como convidado no grandioso Tales from the Thousand Lakes. A seguinte faixa, The Silverhoney, já segue numa linha do doom/death mais tradicional com vocais guturais e guitarras pesadas, e eis que de repente a coisa toda cai para um metal progressivos com algumas passagens alá Opeth.
Weary Oblivion é a mais lenta do play, e seu inicio melancólico nos traz uma certa tranquilidade e simpatia pelas melodias que essa faixa nos proporciona. Alternando vocais limpos e guturais, nos dando uma impressão de diálogo entre os personagens da música, algo como “O Médico e o Monstro”.
E para fechar a parada a funkera SunDay Monster, com seu baixo carregado de slaps e andamento diferente do habitual, com algumas passagens viajantes, deixando a faixa no mínimo interessante.
Fica a dica para quem está afim de ouvir algo diferente e longe do habitual.

Illuminate the Silence are five musicians from Moscow still experimenting to find their own sound. And just like the band’s name, Silverhoney is a non sequitur, leaping back and forth between metal, rock, jazz and even funk. The four-song EP moves in and out of these styles, abruptly switching from one to another throughout.
At times, the sonic shifts are disjointed, but when the schizophrenia works, it is a thing of beauty. Title track The Silverhoney is one such example. The song meanders through musical styles, ebbing and flowing with ease, taking the listener on an emotional journey. Growls morph into singing as heavy, distorted guitar rhythms give way to energetic, head-bopping riffs. The Silverhoney isn’t just a song—it’s a metal symphony that builds to climax and full conclusion.
It’s that ability to progress a song from beginning to end that sets Illuminate the Silence apart from other metal bands. Not the standard verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus pattern most bands use, their post-metal influences help them build satisfying songs with substance.
The guitar work on Silverhoney is mostly doom and post-metal inspired, but isn’t limited to these styles. Classic metal riffs fade in and out of most songs. And though the guitars on the album are very good, the rhythm section drives the sound. Jazz-infused beats and funky baselines dominate the album’s best parts. But don’t let the progressive styles fool you. This duo can play it heavy. My Preacher and Weary Oblivion feature mostly metal and rock beats. Though stylistically different, the unique drum and bass patterns remind me of the time Incubus appeared on the scene, showing us rock still had new avenues to explore.
Silverhoney isn’t a perfect album. My Preacher sounds more like a medley than a single song, and the band’s experimentation sometimes reaches the absurd. The death-metal growls forty-eight seconds into Sunday Monster don’t fit into the flow of the song, and make a potentially great song merely good. This lack of transitions between opposing styles holds the album back.
Four songs just aren’t enough to discern any band’s style, particularly a band with such a wide breadth of abilities as Illuminate the Silence. But, Silverhoney does give us enough to appreciate the band’s unique musical talents. I highly recommend this album to metal fans who enjoy one-off types of music that defy classification.

At times, the sonic shifts are disjointed, but when the schizophrenia works, it is a thing of beauty. Title track The Silverhoney is one such example. The song meanders through musical styles, ebbing and flowing with ease, taking the listener on an emotional journey. Growls morph into singing as heavy, distorted guitar rhythms give way to energetic, head-bopping riffs. The Silverhoney isn’t just a song—it’s a metal symphony that builds to climax and full conclusion.
It’s that ability to progress a song from beginning to end that sets Illuminate the Silence apart from other metal bands. Not the standard verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus pattern most bands use, their post-metal influences help them build satisfying songs with substance.
The guitar work on Silverhoney is mostly doom and post-metal inspired, but isn’t limited to these styles. Classic metal riffs fade in and out of most songs. And though the guitars on the album are very good, the rhythm section drives the sound. Jazz-infused beats and funky baselines dominate the album’s best parts. But don’t let the progressive styles fool you. This duo can play it heavy. My Preacher and Weary Oblivion feature mostly metal and rock beats. Though stylistically different, the unique drum and bass patterns remind me of the time Incubus appeared on the scene, showing us rock still had new avenues to explore.
Silverhoney isn’t a perfect album. My Preacher sounds more like a medley than a single song, and the band’s experimentation sometimes reaches the absurd. The death-metal growls forty-eight seconds into Sunday Monster don’t fit into the flow of the song, and make a potentially great song merely good. This lack of transitions between opposing styles holds the album back.
Four songs just aren’t enough to discern any band’s style, particularly a band with such a wide breadth of abilities as Illuminate the Silence. But, Silverhoney does give us enough to appreciate the band’s unique musical talents. I highly recommend this album to metal fans who enjoy one-off types of music that defy classification.

Il est fréquent qu'un groupe se qualifie d'expérimental pour ne pas trop prendre de risque. Derrière ce terme peut se cacher beaucoup de choses. Et ça, les Moscovistes de Iluminate The Silence l'ont bien compris. Pratiquant à la fois du death métal et du doom sur de longues compositions, le noyau principal de leur musique se veut progressif et par conséquent expérimental puisqu'il s'essaient à divers genres mais le tout sur une base progressive qui leur permet d'y mettre tout et n'importe quoi.
Ce patchwork musical peut faire peur au premier abord mais il faut avouer que leur approche est assez intéressante et intriguante à la fois. Du métal progressif qui lorgne sur du doom et du death ça ne cour pas les rues et ce mélange peut s'avérer très dangereux si on ne le maîtrise pas correctement.
Mais bizarrement, Illuminate The Silence s'en sort plutôt bien. Prenant le temps de développer une ambiance particulière mais propre à lui même, le groupe se révèle être une bonne surprise et réussi le tour de force de ne pas tomber dans tous les clichés du métal progressif que bon nombre de métalleux aiment détester.
"My Preacher" lance les hostilités avec son lourd thème aux sonorités Égyptiennes tandis que le rythme va crescendo pour commencer à diffuser les premiers hurlements. Sacré contraste si il en est. Illuminate The Silence aime surprendre et durant la totalité de l'EP il va s'amuser à promener l'auditeur dans tous les sens sans vraiment lui donner un point d'accroche.
D'autant plus que pour un EP la durée est relativement longue pour quatre pistes ce qui permettra au groupe d'user de compositions assez longues pour pouvoir utiliser ce coté déstabilisant à leur guise. Nombreux sont les changements radicaux de tempos. C'est la que le choc du doom et du death prend toute son ampleur. Versant dans le doom ("Silverhoney", "Weary Oblivion") lors des passages très lents avec de putride growls en prime, ils n'hésitent pas à remettre un coup de fouet aux compositions avec des ambiances death ("My Preacher"). Déstabilisant certes, mais incroyablement bien exécuté !
Mais si jusque là l'EP ne présente pas de défaut majeur et si il fallait mettre un point noir sur ce premier EP, cela serait sur le chant. Si les voix caverneuses et autres growls rendent très bien (quoiqu'un peu clichesque) le chant clair est légèrement en deçà. Un peu trop frêle dans les aigus, Forlock dénaturalise la violence des morceaux. C'est dommage car le reste est très bien conçu.
Pour un premier EP, Illuminate The Silence s'en sort très bien. Officiant dans un style assez inédit, le résultat avait de quoi faire peur aux premiers abords mais avec ce Silverhoney, le groupe a relevé le challenge avec brio. Il ne manque plus qu'à affirmer cette identité musicale avec une bonne production et des idées encore plus poussées et le succès leur ouvrira sans doutes des portes.

OK, this Silverhoney EP is a bit of a head-scratcher.
Badmoodman Music (a Solitude Productions sub-label) tags Illuminate The Silence as experimental metal. I'm not entirely sure how "experimental" they are, it's not totally avante-garde, but it's not like any release I've heard in a while.
It starts off innocuously enough with the "meh" track, "My Preacher (Had Black Eyes)". It's basically a post-rock song heavy on the overdrive. Just another post rock band... only this time with some out of place vocals. The singer roars, snarls, and rasps in a fashion to make a lot of death/black metal frontmen green with envy… then mixes it up with a whiny flow reminiscent of Jonathon Davis' (Korn) performance on "Freak On A Leash."
Ummm… okay. I guess.
The title track enters with more "meh" riffing and roars when suddenly about the 1:45 mark the band breaks into a catchy metal groove which lasts 30 seconds before they make another left turn with another catchy riff whose style I cannot describe with cool bass lines rolling underneath… then heavy double bass bursts… the song plays out shifting across differing styles. Seems disjointed at times, but at least keeps you interested.
OK, the musicians seem to be every bit as versatile as their vocalist…
"Weary Oblivion" is easily the best track on the album - starting with a doomish vibe and more of the Korny-klean vocals which have now taken on a Peter "Prince of Goth" Murphy (Bauhaus) vibe which really fits the mood. Roars ensue, and the music, as with a lot of good post-rock tunes, builds in intensity as the track unfolds. This is probably the best starting point to check them out, although many of you will likely skip to the closer after you read the following sentence…
The EP comes to a (low) end when "Sunday Monster" kicks off with a booty-shakin' "You mind if we dance wich yo' dates?" funkadelic bassline that will appeal to the party people in the house. I was momentarily confused, wondering if I had incorrectly tagged an Infectious Grooves song (See: versatile musicians) before the vox reminded me I was in the right place. Really odd song…
All in all, I don't think Illuminate The Silence are as "experimental" as they are versatile…sometimes the various influences and styles bring cool flourishes to songs, whereas at other times they seem to be at odds with one another. And on "Weary Oblivion", to paraphrase Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith, "I love it when a song comes together."

Gli Illuminate The Silence si definiscono "sperimentali", non so se sia il termine più consono a interpretare ciò che riportano in musica, di certo v'è una ricerca che tende a pasteggiare in più lidi cibandosi di doom, rock, death metal, alternative e progressive. Sì un vero pout pourri che prova a dare sostanza all'ep "Silverhoney".
Un mini lavoro di quasi venticinque minuti suddiviso in quattro tracce che alterna movimenti pesanti e grevi di stampo primordiale riconducibili a nobili origini eighties (My Dying Bride), acustiche e fraseggi solistici non lontani dal rimembrare gli Opeth, varianti post-metal e nu con un pizzico di Soad a far capolino creando un mix disomogeneo riscontrabile chiaramente in tutta la sua esplosiva e non proprio controllabile natura nell'opener "My Preacher (Had Black Eyes)".
Il platter scivola via senza troppi problemi, in più di un'occasione all'orecchio giungono contrasti talmente netti che evidenziano quanto gli Illuminate The Silence ci tengano a non rinchiudersi dentro recinti "ordinari", n'è dimostrazione la conclusiva "Sunday Monster" capace di ricordare la funky attitude alla R.H.C.P. fusa con l'ammaliante "flood" di certo alternative rock e la propensione massiccia di una core song grazie alla prova dietro al microfono che nei momenti acidi punta i piedi "grattando" a più non posso.
La formazione strumentalmente svolge il proprio dovere senza grossi intoppi, con l'accoppiata centrale di brani composta da "The Silverhoney" e "Weary Oblivion" a rincarare la dose di cambi di tempo e miscelazione di stili già esplicata nelle due nominate. Quello che manca è la zampata capace di fare la differenza e un assetto che garantisca in maniera definitiva una rappresentazione fluida dell'immaginario sonoro intrapreso soprattutto nei momenti in cui si decide di aumentare o decelerare i giri, operazione che riesce alle perfezione in una "The Silverhoney" che sotto tale aspetto guadagna punti.
Le idee non mancano, la produzione a supporto dell'ep è soddisfacente, c'è quindi di che rimanere contenti, è pur sempre di una prima uscita che si parla, non ci resta quindi che vedere come e quanto sapranno affinare le qualità messe in mostra in "Silverhoney" in un futuro lavoro che dia conferma della loro bontà compositiva.
Possiamo scommettere sugli Illuminate The Silence? Perchè no.
