I’ve been fortunate enough to follow Ukrainian Luna, Mr. DeMort’s one-man band, from the very beginning with the impressive debut Ashes to Ashes (2014).
The EP, with the long name There Is No Tomorrow Gone Beyond Sorrow Under a Sheltering Mask (2015) compressed what DeMort had on his mind, and appeared as dynamic with frequently variation, before the album On The Other Side Of Life (2015) seemed to me a little bit disappointing.
The band is anew ready with a new dose of syrup-slow tristesse, draped in symphonic instruments.

Swallow Me Leaden Sky consists of two songs with a total playing time of 44 minutes, which, with a decent margin, also makes it the shortest album from the band.

Luna’s orchestral version of funeral doom, as usual speak to the listener without the use of words. The music is instrumental and conveys its message through the moods it builds in the listener’s more or less conscious mind. In the case of Swallow Me Leaden Sky, DeMort’s idea has been to create a symphonic ode to “the darkness of the night, the grandeur of nature, and human passions”.

When the music soar heavily, monumental and bombastic through the mind, sweeping the soul along like a magic foehn wind, it feels like thunder clouds of bottled up despair looking down on grandiose landscapes in admiration and respect. The band’s heavy and majestically resounding music is shrouded in grieving resignation. The music is heavier and darker than ever, but does not attempt to impose on others its gloomy nature. With sorely tried courage, and inherent concern, it tries instead to draw attention to the beauty that, after all, do exist.

The flow feels natural, and so does the flattering sonorous sound. The variation slides slowly but surely, and a few faster rhythmic elements have even been added, among other in the middle of the title song. Both this song and first track, Everything Becomes Dust, is music of the suggestive kind, and both songs have the high quality I’ve come to desire and expect from Luna. Thus, Swallow Me Leaden Sky can safely be recommended to fans of leaden symphonic tone poem that, much like great-grandparents, takes all the time needed to complete their storytelling.

Luna are a band from Ukraine that plays a symphonic and instrumental mixture of funeral doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2017 album “Swallow Me Leaden Sky” which will be released by Solitude Productions.

Atmospheric sounding synths start off the album while also bringing in symphonic elements at times as well as mixing in with the heavier sections of the songs which are mostly done in a slow funeral doom metal fashion and both of the tracks that are present on the recording are very long and epic in length

All of the songs are instrumental with no vocals or song writing ever being utilized while elements of death metal are also utilized at times and on the second track the synths also start bringing in a variety of more keys along with all of the music sticking to a very slow musical direction as well as the drums speeding up briefly and adding in more aggression and when guitar leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion.

Luna plays a musical style that is mostly rooted in funeral doom metal while the symphonic and death metal elements gives the songs more originality as well a s keeping everything instrumental and the production sounds very professional.

In my opinion Luna are a very great sounding symphonic and instrumental mixture of funeral doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK “Everything Becomes Dust”.

November. Bleiern, drückend schwer scheint der triefende, graue Himmel bis auf den durchnässten Erdboden zu reichen und alles zu verschlucken. Wie festgefroren zieht eine bewegungslose Atmosphäre alle nach unten. Der Beton der Städte steht noch abweisender als sonst, kein trauter Ort. Nirgends. Das Tageslicht nimmt weiter ab, die Natur liegt im Tiefschlaf, entlaubte Baumriesen stehen als mächtige Mahner und Überreste des vergangenen Jahres, alles Leben hat sich in die Tiefe zurückgezogen, dort sammeln sich die Kräfte im Verborgenen, um den bevorstehenden neuen Zyklus überhaupt zu ermöglichen. All dies spürt der Wanderer, der eisige Berge und verschneite Wälder zu dieser Jahreszeit mit LUNA durchstreift. Er ist beeindruckt von der Macht und Schönheit der Natur, die den unendlichen Kreislauf von Werden und Vergehen unentwegt antreibt.

Mehr als zwanzig Minuten lang erlebt der Hörer in ´Everything Becomes Dust´ eine majestätische, symphonisch-instrumentale Naturbetrachtung in ultralangsamer Taktung. Zähflüssig wie fast erkaltete Lava sind diese Klänge, die ständige Wiederholung des Grundmotivs als Antrieb nutzend, und trotzdem unglaublich hypnotisch und eingängig – ganz hohe Kunst! Gesang würde nur stören, hier geht es um Themen weitab der Menschheit. Das Schlagzeug und vor allem die stark nachhallenden Bassriffs bilden das Fundament, über dem ein droniger, rhythmisierter Bordun endlos ausschwingt. Dazu variieren die Bläser, Streicher und Orgel nachbildenden Keyboards feierliche, ansteigende und abebbende Melodien, und immer wieder ist es dieser unglaublich schwere, kräftige Bass, der alles nach vielen Wendungen und Mäandern zurück auf die Spur bringt, den Kreis schließt und von neuem beginnen lässt. Eines führt zum anderen, baut darauf auf, Wiederholung und Ab-/Wandlung durch Wechsel des führenden Instruments…des Rhythmus…der Geschwindigkeit…oder der Tonart. Solokünstler DeMort erzählt ohne Worte, beschreibt distant-souverän, ohne sich in so menschliches wie Gefühle hineinziehen zu lassen – man stelle sich ULVERs ´Perdition City – Music To An Interior Film’ als Soundtrack zu einer nächtlichen Schneeschuh-Gletscherexpedition vor. Wer seine metallische Meditationsmusik noch nicht gefunden hat, sollte dieses Epos unbedingt antesten!

Der zweite Teil dieser Platte, die zweite Komposition ist nur unmerklich länger als der erste Monumentalsong. ´Swallow Me Leaden Sky’ kommt deutlich liedhafter daher, erinnert zuerst an einen vorsichtig abtastenden Dialog oder Tanz, und spielt nun in der verwirrenden Welt der menschlichen Beziehungen, der Berg- und Talfahrten der Gefühle. Dieses Stück machen wesentlich mehr Dynamik und Dramatik aus, todesmetallische, Blastbeat-getriebene Passagen spielen nun eine deutlich größere Rolle, trotzdem strahlt alles weiterhin eine einladende Ruhe aus. Melancholie ist die zugrunde liegende Emotion, wunderbar abgebildet durch rein vokalisierende weibliche Chöre gegen Ende des Stückes, zu denen sich der überirdische Gesang einer Leadgitarre gesellt – Repetition zur absoluten Perfektion geführt.

Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger ´On The Other Side Of Life´ kommt LUNAs drittes Album insgesamt deutlich organischer daher. DeMorts Virtuosität ist beeindruckend, sowohl was Komposition, Arrangements als auch die Beherrschung sämtlicher Instrumente betrifft. Während sich die häufig mit technischer Kälte agierenden und eher progressiv-experimentell ausgerichteten (mittleren) ULVER oder MONOLITHE wunderbar für lange, einsame nächtliche Autofahrten in der Großstadt eignen, ist dies ein Soundtrack für Naturliebhaber, für Freunde von EA oder AHAB. Und damit genau die richtige Musik für die kommende Jahreszeit.

Su quest’ultimo lavoro della one man band ucraina Luna avei potuto più o meno fare un copia incolla di quanto scritto nelle precedenti occasioni: DeMort, titolare del progetto, continua imperterrito a sfornare un buon funeral doom atmosferico interamente strumentale e che trae ispirazione in maniera piuttosto marcata dal sound degli Ea, anche se Swallow Me Leaden Sky mostra una progressione importante, se non dal punto di vista dall’originalità, sicuramente da quello prettamente qualitativo.

D’altronde, come già detto parlando di Ashes to Ashes e On the Other Side of Life, i due full length usciti rispettivamente nel 2014 e nel 2015, il rifarsi al sound tipico della misteriosa band americana non è certo da considerarsi deprecabile, specialmente se si apprezza in toto questa espressione musicale che qui viene riproposta con competenza e buona ispirazione.
Il permanere della struttura interamente strumentale resta pur sempre un limite, anche se forse in questo genere lo è meno che in altri; d’altro canto, però, in questo ultimo lavoro, non si può fare a meno di notare che alcuni degli elementi di discontinuità inseriti nel bellissimo ep There Is No Tomorrow Gone Beyond Sorrow Under a Sheltering Mask, uscito a cavallo tra i primi due full length, vengono ripresi dal musicista ucraino riuscendo cosi a conferire al tutto un’aura più drammatica e solenne, specialmente nella seconda delle due lunghe tracce, la title track. E’ proprio qui che il sound acquista parecchi punti in personalità e profondità rispetto al pur buono brano iniziale Everything Becomes Dust, con l’aggiunta di una sorta di vocalizzo campionato che si fa gradevolmente ossessivo nella seconda metà della traccia: la chitarra diviene finalmente protagonista soppiantando le tastiere nel ruolo preponderante assunto fino ad allora, spostando il tutto su un piano più cosmico affine a quello dei Monolithe, altra importante fonte di ispirazione per la musica marchiata Luna.
Grazie a questo l’operato di DeMort acquista quello spessore che era mancato talvolta nei lavori precedenti, assurgendo ad una forma decisamente compiuta e ben diversa da quella di buon surrogato del già esistente, definizione che sembrava essere fino ad oggi quella più calzante per la one man band di Kiev.
Swallow Me Leaden Sky regala così quasi tre quarti d’ora di buon funeral death doom atmosferico, che ben difficilmente non farà breccia negli estimatori del genere.

Faisant suite à un premier album (“Ashes To Ashes”, paru en 2014), “On The Other Side Of Life” nous avait positivement marqué en 2015 (relire ici ).

Et le troisième opus, “Swallow Me Leaden Sky”, emprunte une voie tout aussi massive et impressionnante. Ne dérogeant en rien à l’équilibre trouvé précédemment, ce projet solo joue à fond la carte d’un Funeral Doom strictement instrumental. Nous n’avons donc pas à subir ni des grondements caverneux et indistincts, ni de fantomatiques vocalises féminines, ce dont on doit remercier a priori LUNA tant ces registres sont de longue date rebattus dans ce sous-genre !

Comme sur l’opus précédent, on ne trouve sur cet album que deux titres, avec forcément des durées on ne peut plus conséquentes : “Everything Becomes Dust” dépasse 21′ et “Swallow me Leaden Sky” frôle les 23′. L’auditeur doit donc se confronter à des monolithes et l’absence de chant peut à juste titre faire craindre l’aridité d’une telle épreuve. Or, ni la longueur des compositions, ni l’absence de voix n’induisent une quelconque perte de repères, pas plus qu’un sentiment d’ennui.

Tentons l’analyse de ce paradoxe miraculeux. Plusieurs ingrédients instrumentaux représentent des marqueurs typiques du Funeral Doom, au premier rang desquels la lenteur du tempo ainsi que le côté dépouillé et granitique des riffs, d’une simplicité enfantine autant que d’une lourdeur pachydermique. Même si à quelques rares occasions les riffs se font plus distinctement dessinés et plus tranchants, le lot commun demeure la tonne de plomb qui vous tombe pesamment dessus !
Du coup, qu’est-ce qui peut bien sauver l’ensemble du monolithisme et donc de l’exercice de style impressionnant mais monotone ? Les arrangements. Qu’il s’agisse de l’introduction harpe et cordes au début du titre éponyme ou bien des plages de claviers omniprésentes et lumineuses, ils injectent des éléments de contraste pertinents et créent une ambiance majestueuse palpable. De surcroît, il arrive que les parties de batterie s’animent quelque peu, autre entaille à la linéarité rythmique.

Au final, la puissance est au rendez-vous, de même qu’un fort gothique sentiment de mélancolie, avec à la clé un rendu à la fois tellurique et aérien. On ne peut que saluer la performance…

Luna is het eenmansproject van Anton Semenenko uit Oekraïne. Op deze derde symfonische funeral doom plaat getiteld Swallow Me Leaden Sky uitgebracht via het Russische Solitude Productions, probeert hij klassieke muziek aan doom metal te koppelen en dat lukt bijna.

Twee nummers staan er op deze full length plaat, beide zijn meer dan twintig minuten lang. Dat is niet vreemd in dit genre. Bell Witch maakte dit jaar een plaat met één nummer van 83 minuten dus Luna doet het voor de helft. Everything Becomes Dust begint met dreigende klassieke muziek die niet onder doet voor een soundtrack van Howard Shore. Dan barst er een doomriff los die zo zwaar is als een grafsteen. De klassieke muziek geeft de muziek meer diepte en een majestueuze grootsheid. Dat klinkt enorm cliché maar andere woorden om dit muziekstuk te omschrijven zijn er niet.

Het tweede nummer is het titelnummer en begint heel zacht met een harp. Totdat de drums en de gitaren bij vallen en er een Dracula-achtige sfeer ontstaat door de keyboards. Er gebeurt een kwartier erg weinig, de keyboards en gitaren roepen een hele doodse atmosfeer op maar nergens wordt ik geraakt. Doom metal moet je voelen tot in de diepste krochten van je hart en ja, misschien ben ik er wel te ongeduldig voor? Er zitten ongeveer tien seconden tussen de slagen op de snaredrum. Na een kwartier wordt de horrorsfeer nog meer creepy door spookachtig gezang, gevolgd door een solo die sijpelt van droefenis. Het doet me alleen niet zoveel.

Conclusie: Luna’s muzikale concept is goed en origineel: klassieke muziek vermengen met doom moet heel goed te doen zijn, alleen wordt het op Swallow Me Leaden Sky net niet spannend genoeg gemaakt. De voornaamste aandachtstrekker is de klassieke muziek die erg goed en cinematisch in elkaar is gezet. De doomriffs zijn wat ééntonig waardoor je tijdens sommige gedeeltes gaat kijken of je nog appjes hebt binnen gekregen. Er valt nog veel te ontdekken voor Luna en ik ben toch benieuwd wat deze man op de volgende plaat gaat doen.

There are only two tracks here, both very long. “Everything Becomes Dust” grinds into view in a way fitting the title, feeling like the opening dirge to a post apocalyptic movie. It then feels like it does build, albeit at the pace of someone digging a hold for a swimming pool with a teaspoon. Atmospheres aplenty but it does become a little tiresome.

After just under fourteen minutes there is a mild flicker of something different but it’s short lived. Unlike the track. What they do, they do very well but they over stay their welcome, and then some, on this instrumental dirge.

The title track follows, mellow plucks starting it off. The title suggests something darker and they soon oblige, with the first couple of minutes building quite rapidly. The rhythms then start showing some real pace before they strip it back again. This is then followed by an absolute age of more ambient dirge.

Full of skill, they only appear to have one idea that they manage to play for over forty minutes. If you want some background music for self-harm, this is probably it. Whilst the music is very good I have to mark it down connsiderably due to the lack of development.
