Revelations of Rain bring us their fifth album of gloomy Death/Doom Metal from under the blackened skies of Moscow.

‘Altar of Whores’ opens with a beautifully crafted acoustic passage and silky dream-like leads. I’m hooked and memorised by these. Toms methodically play along, before a cascading crescendo of noise bursts through your eardrums. Heavy grunts melt away your fears and breathe life into old bones. The mix of spoken words and grunts are a nice split. It has plenty of depth for an opening song and really represents what the band is showcasing to us.

Revelations of Rain have a great ability to change tempo and direction in each song, which does not take anything away from the music. It’s a flowing melodic triumph. The leads are thoughtfully played, seeping emotion and sorrow.

By the third song ‘Scaffold’ i’m totally digging the music and great production. The bass is warm and you can hear every sombre note cutting through the guitars. The songs themselves are well over the six minute mark, with some hitting eight minutes, but even with the longer ones you never feel like you’re listening to tracks that long, such is the versatility on display.

‘In Joy and Sorrow’ has some great lead work in it and the harmonies are majestic and well thought out. I found some squeaks on the leads a little bit annoying – but, hopefully, when I listen more they won’t become an unwelcome presence.

‘Instead Of A Thousand Words’ is a beautifully written instrumental. Acoustic passages with warm leads leave your mind in a dream-like state – this is a band who have a reputation for great song building and structures. They play with a lot of clean acoustic sounds within the album and personally I can never get enough of these parts. The overall sound of the album is really good. I love the sound and tone of the leads, everything just blends seamlessly.

A great addition to the catalogue from these seasoned doomsters. This will be spinning in my head for weeks, and I welcome it with open arms.

Deadly Storm

Pokora, lidem chybí pokora, říkám si, když chodím ulicemi. Vidím ty zachmuřené tváře, vztek, neomalenost. Obrazovky svítící do tmy vám nikdy lidský hlas nenahradí. Jakoby všem zmrzl navěky úsměv v křeči. Neupřímnost, zloba. Potkat pak člověka, z kterého je cítit pozitivní energie je skoro zázrak. Než se tak ale stane, musím se několikrát převtělit v sebe sama. Raději si poslechnu nějakou hudbu, napadají mě třeba ruští melodičtí doomaři REVELATIONS OF RAIN. Těleso, které uchopilo tento smutný styl stejným způsobem, jako to dělají DOOM:VS, SKEPTICISM, OFFICIUM TRISTE, TYRANNY, SHAPE OF DESPAIR.

V letošní novince “Akrasia” jakoby se zračil nekonečný ruský kraj, ledové pláně, lesy plné čistoty. Vše je syrové, přesto jemné, nakrájené během okamžiku ostrým nožem. Nejvíc jsme si padli do oka cestou ranním městem, kdy dole kolem centra sněžilo a když jsem vystoupil za tónů prvních dvou skladeb z tramvaje, tak mě objal holomráz. REVELATIONS OF RAIN nejsou vlastně ničím noví, nejsou objevovači, drží se tradice, klasických postupů, které skládají vedle sebe s vkusem a citem pro věčnost.

Jestliže má být výsledným dojmem z doomových desek smutek, tak tentokrát bych si troufal tvrdit, že novinka “Akrasia” by mohla slabším jedincům způsobit deprese. Líbí se mi ten led, padající sníh, šepot větru, dlouhé táhlé melodie i hlas, který dodává celé scenérii ještě na větší beznaději. REVELATIONS OF RAIN vyprávějí příběhy o tom, že na konci tunelu vás žádné světlo nečeká, naděje už dávno chcípla hladem a zbyl už jen chlad. Najednou mi přijde, že vidím do černých duší všech, co potkávám ráno na ulici. Přehrabuji se v jejich snech, smutcích, beznaději. Troufám si směle tvrdit, že letošní počin se Rusům opravdu povedl. Vynikající klasický doom metal!

Doom metal v podání ruských REVELATIONS OF RAIN je velmi smutný. Pánové přesně vystihli náladu nekonečných procházek mezi náhrobky. Všude je smutek, tma a smrt. Z desky je cítit obrovské nadšení pro záhrobí. Nálada je pochmurná, skladby monumentální a bolestivé. Nechce se mi ani věřit, že je to první album kapely. Beru CD do ruky čím dál tím častěji a rád se nechávám unášet pomalými tóny “Akrasia”. Venku zase mrzne a do našich duší vstupuje nekonečná temnota. Album, které vám probodne srdce kouskem ledu!

You can feel huge enthusiasm for the dead on the album. The mood is somber songs are monumental and painful. I can’t even believe that this is the first album of the band. I take the CD to my hand more and more often, and I let me be carried by “Akrasia”. Outside it freezes again and the darkness is coming into our souls. The album, that will pierce your heart with a piece of ice!

Tout le monde est heureux en ces périodes de fête. On voit la famille, on ouvre les cadeaux tout ça c’est cool ! Oui mais pas pour tout le monde… Il y a des gens comme moi qui s’isolent dans la musique triste et mélancolique, aussi froide que le temps dehors (du moins en Sibérie). Je veux parler bien sûr de doom metal ! Ne vous en faîtes pas pour moi, avec un album de cette qualité, pas moyen de passer un mauvais moment ! Le groupe est donc originaire de Russie (pas de Sibérie, plutôt de Moscou) et s’appelle Откровения Дождя… Bon en anglais ça donne Revelations Of Rain. Et il sort son cinquième album « Акрасия », qui signifie « Akrasia ».

Ne vous attendez pas à un doom à l’ancienne loin de là, ici on est plus dans le registre doom/death voire mélodic doom/death. Non c’est pas de la surenchère, ça existe vraiment et il y a quelques pépites dans le genre qui méritent qu’on s’y attarde, notamment le one-man band Algos, avec des artworks sublimes ! En parlant d’artwork, celui de Revelations Of Rain est magnifique, nous voyons des montagnes dans les tons bleu clair de la mélancolie et du désespoir, avec en noir, des ruines antiques, et le logo dans le ciel, super beau car il est écrit en russe.

Musicalement ce sont des morceaux très longs très écrasants, le tempo décolle pas du sol, et si les sublimes soli tentent d’élever tout ça vers les cieux, au dessus des ces monts qui posent sur la pochette, le tempo et la voix grave du chanteur ramènent tout ça par terre, comme si la tristesse n’était qu’un gros boulet qui nous empêcherait de sauter, de nous échapper. Mention spécial au troisième morceau « Scaffold » (je vous l’ai traduit) qui est juste terrible ! La lourdeur de ce morceau va vous écraser, et sa froideur mélancolique va vous déprimer au plus haut point ! Les guitares tentent de nous faire des soli aigus mais n’y parviennent pas, la batterie vous martèle (les deux notes à la fin du morceau) bref, vous allez vous rendre compte de votre solitude avec ça !
En fait tout l’album joue sur ce contraste de guitare grave et lent et la guitare aiguë et rapide.

Cependant, cet album ne s’adresse pas à tout les publics. Si vous détester ce genre de musique, n’allez pas vous infliger ça, même s’il y a des passages magnifiques et planant comme sur « In Joy And Sorrow » qui oscille entre la joie et la tristesse. Alors je suis d’accord pour dire que ce n’est pas non plus ultra original mais les émotions sont bien transmises, tout est bien composé et produit. Malgré tout, ça reste un album qui m’a touché et je pense qu’il ravira les fans de ce style, qui ne se renouvelle certes peut-être pas, mais qui est toujours aussi poignant.

Points positifs :
– Les émotions certes négatives comme la tristesse le désespoir etc… sont bien retranscrite, l’album sent la mort et la désolation, tout ça dans une ambiance glaciale.
– Le duo de guitares aiguë/grave qui apporte une touche à la fois planante mais aussi écrasante.
– Artwork magnifique, avec de jolies couleurs.

Points négatifs :
– Musique s’adressant à un public prédéfinit, par conséquent ce n’est pas facile d’accès.
– Peut être redondant à force et manquer d’originalité car l’album est assez long (une heure).

I’m the kind of guy that’s a fan of both brute force approach and the more laid back and methodic way of laying down metal. A few styles of metal come to my mind when I think of both of those, but none come to my mind quicker than doom metal which has absolute throngs of bands that can take both styles and weave something phenomenal out of them both. Let’s take Revelations of Rain, for example, who have been at the game for quite some time now.

It’s enough of a challenge to try and perform one of the two aforementioned styles as each can easily have an absolutely ridiculous result when put in the right hands, but when a band comes along that attempts both and succeeds wondrously is the kind of shit that people like me live for. It was previously unbeknownst to me of the very existence of Revelations of Rain, but thanks to knowing the right people with similar taste in music I was able to discover “Akrasia” and it’s just nothing short of fucking splendid. The entire hour long experience of this 8-track album is overflowing with crunchy riffs, atmospheric rhythms that really tickle your senses, and a presence that one cannot ignore even if it’s on an extremely casual listen. “Akrasia” is the very definition of a roller-coaster album that can easily flip from being fucking crushing to completely atmospheric. That really helps each song sound more fresh than the last, more entertaining with each listen, and so fucking dynamic that you can’t help but appreciate the notion. Revelations of Rain has proven to be a real master at making a truly gripping and thrilling record that is something that can be heard by many metal heads out there with absolute ease, and that’s a feat very little bands can accomplish nowadays, but this Russian group does it with absolute grace.

To call this record the kind of thing that has to be heard twice to truly experience would be a bit of an understatement, for even after a double spin I still had to listen to this to fully grasp it but goddamn was each and every spin fucking entertaining! “Akrasia” is an album that just keeps on giving from its crushing intensity to beautiful atmosphere that’s extremely well-crafted if nothing else.

Nem volt egyszerű feladat némi információt szerezni az orosz zenekar származási városáról, aminek Podolsk a neve, mivel a hozzáadott –i képzővel már csak a lengyel focistáról olvashattam. Ellenben a Revelations Of Rain név már bőséggel szolgált tartalmat kíváncsi természetemnek. Ugyan nem most ismertem meg a banda nevét, mégis most váltak számomra igazán érdekessé, mert szinte még forró, új lemezük azonnal megnyert magának. Minden zenekar életében lenni szokott egy vízválasztónak tartott lemez, egy olyan produkció, ahonnan már igazán felnőtt, érett, összeszokott társaságról beszélhetünk, ahonnan azonban gyakran már csak lefelé vezetni az út, ritkábban felfelé. Nekik az Akrasia már az ötödik nagylemezük és kiégésnek, lazulásnak semmi jelét sem mutatják. Ugyan átesett már némi változáson a zenekar tagok tekintetében, de az zenei irányvonalat kezdetektől vasbeton szerkezetként összetartó Ilya Remizov, Olesya Muromskaya kettős továbbra is a helyén van és nem engedi a popkultúra beszivárgását halállal és kétellyel átitatott, ugyanakkor gyönyörben és monumentalitásban tobzódó világába. Tehát ötödik nagylemez, semmi demó, semmi cicoma, csak funeral death/doom metal, ami folyamatosan fejlődik, finomodik az elődjéhez képest. Nem okoz számukra problémát a változatosság kérdése sem, mert a végtelenbe révedő cammogások mellett folyamatosan kapunk középtempókat, időnként még igazi robbanásokat is, vagy akusztikus gitártémákat. Szépséges borítójuk alá pedig biztos kézzel, rutinosan pakoltak a stílus kedvelőinek bő egy órás fekete misét, tekintettel a hosszú utazások előtt állókra. A lemez dalai természetesen most is orosz anyanyelvükön szólalnak meg, ezért tudatlanságom megakadályozott a mélyebb értelmezésben, de azért az angol nyelvű dalcímeket összehalásztam a hozzám hasonló cipőben járóknak.

A lemezt a Altar Of Whores nyitja meg csodásan csengő akusztikával és gitárszólóval, lassan belépő dobokkal, hogy az éterben visszhangzó melankóliába megfelelő módon hasítson a hörgéssel összekapcsolt kemény riff. Majd kapunk egy kis andalgást az Ahab eleganciájával párosítva, némi narratív szöveget, majd a dal második felére egy kemény húsdarálást, amire lehetetlen nem bólogatni. Ilya gitárszólója és annak hangulata az, amit gyakran szoktam még hiányolni a hasonló stílust képviselő zenekaroktól, mert hiába nem mai találmány a húrok ilyen fajta nyúzása, itt egyszerűen kihagyhatatlan lenne. A feltorlódott energiákat a súlyosan lassú Through Phobetor’s Night tartja szinten remek hangzásával és menetelős nyitásával, hogy aztán funeral doom szintre lassulva juttasson el minket a dal második felében érkező, meglehetősen paranoid hangulatig. A Scaffold is nagyon kimért tempóval folytatja a lemezt, fura, disszonáns tördelései ennek ellenére is kiérződnek és lovagolják meg a már megkreált érzelmi világot. Ilya legtöbbször ugyan hörgéssel dolgozik, de ezt is nagyon változatosan teszi, akár itt, akár a többi tételben képes érzelmeket közvetíteni vele és időnként a black metalos károgásig torzítja amúgy sem X-faktor kompatibilis hangját. Hagyományos doom témákkal nyit az In Joy And Sorrow, melyet melankólia és suttogás, könnyed dallamok tarkítanak. A 9 perces bánatvonatban alig van ének, de az szerencsére nagyon hatásos, főleg a dal végi csúcspontként szolgáló részek. Az Instead Of A Thousand Words mély basszussal nyit, ismét akusztikával, ahogy az a műfaj nagykönyvében meg van írva, majd egy valóban instrumentális funeral doom merengéssé növi ki magát, amit nagyon kellemes hallgatni. A Demons Of Mercy ráz fel utána frissebbnek tűnő energiáival, dallamos gitártémáival és kifejező hörgéseivel, károgásaival. A Root Of All Evil egy még rusnyább szülemény, ami könnyed kezdése után robban nagyot és válik az egyik legagresszívebb szerzeménnyé a lemezen. A záró On Snow Wings szerteágazó témázgatásaival válik egyedivé a lemezen, ami főként a gitárosoknak köszönhető és az időnkét felbukkanó progresszívebb felfogásnak.
Nem a Revelations Of Rain a világ legjobb death/doom bandája, nem is áll szándékukban annak lenni, de valahogy mindig képesek hozzátenni saját világukhoz, megújulni kereteiken belül és olyan minőségi produkciót kiadni a kezeik közül, amit bátran felvállalhat az időnkét gyengébb lemezeket is támogató Solitude kiadó. Az Akrasia azonban bőven támogatandó és nem okozhat csalódást senkinek, aki kedveli a hangulattal gazdagon ellátott, igényes death/doom vegyületeket. Jó tulajdonságuk még ezen felül, hogy lemezeiket sem titkolják a nagyvilág előtt, így minden eddigi elérhető és tesztelhető a zenekar bandcamp oldalán.
