The debut album of the young band established in Sweden presents music influenced old school doom metal from Candlemass to early My Dying Bride and Anathema albums. After release of several tracks at the split album, the musicians carefully crafted the concept of the first full-length work. Moving away from literal copying the classics of the genre, «In The Rainfall» is an example of old school doom death metal with a modern sound and presentation. A heavy, guitar-based, uncompromising album for fans of primordial doom death metal.

Шведский дуэт SORROWFUL дебютирует полноформатным альбомом на российском лейбле Solitude Productions и, наверное, неспроста. В том плане, что Solitude вполне подходящий лейбл для такой группы как SORROWFUL. Медленный и печальный doom/death metal без особых изысков и откровений, но, тем не менее, весьма качественный как для своего жанра. Какие-то аналогии тут проводить бессмысленно, хотя в качестве примеров можно упомянуть таких грандов как MY DYING BRIDE или ANATHEMA, правда, только если брать их очень ранний период. В целом, не самый плохой релиз в данном жанре, хотя если честно, то мы слышали и получше.

Album d’esordio per Sorrowful, duo composto da Ishtar (chitarre e batteria) e J. Vergara (basso e voce), due musicisti Messicani che però vivono in Svezia. La loro proposta musicale è orientata, invece, al death/doom Inglese, che vede come influenze principali i primissimi My Dying Bride e gli Anathema di “Serenades”, con qualche spunto più estremo che richiama alla mente i Bolt Thrower e i Benediction. I brani sono potenti e d’impatto, privi di quegli orpelli gotici che spesso caratterizzano molte bands del genere. Il riffing è di stampo sabbathiano, con parti cadenzate pesanti come macigni, ben bilanciate da accelerazioni brutali, accostabili stilisticamente ai Benediction di “Subconscious Terror”. Ottima la prova vocale di J. Vergara, in possesso di un growling molto profondo e gutturale, ma allo stesso tempo perfettamente comprensibile, alternato, di tanto in tanto a parti pulite e recitate in tono malinconico, che ricordano molto da vicino gli Anathema degli esordi. I brani sono perfettamente bilanciati tra riffs pachidermici e monolitici, accelerazioni brutali e parti cadenzate, create appositamente per scatenare uno sfrenato headbanging. È un’impresa ardua scegliere un brano che possa rappresentare l’album, vista l’elevata qualità delle composizioni. Nove canzoni sopraffine, egregiamente suonate ed ottimamente composte, senza che nessuna di esse possa considerarsi come riempitivo. Un album avvincente ed estremamente maturo, valorizzato anche dalla bellissima copertina, disegnata dal chitarrista Ishtar. Amanti del doom: fatelo vostro!

This album held my attention all the way through from the opening note until the very end and left me satisfied and wondering when i am going to get to hear more. SORROWFUL manage to churn out some really effective, crushingly heavy, and utterly melancholic music on this nine song opus. They definitely have a solid grasp on what they are doing musically combining the slow agonizing crawl of a funeral dirge with melody and the raging ferocity of death metal, and made me realize what made me love death/doom metal in the first place. SORROWFULL's riffs take me back to the time when doom and death metal were in heavy rotation on my stereo in the late eighties and early nineties.

The overall production and sound quality on the album is top notch. I really can't say enough good things about the guitar riffs on the album. They play dirges that would make the souls of the dead weep,

combine that with bursts of ripping death metal , they manage to paint an excellent image of sorrow onto the canvas of the listener's mind.

SORROWFUL has managed to create one of the more interesting albums in the death/doom genre that I have had the pleasure of sitting down and listening to. Listening to this made me instantly want to start writing a doom album. I definitely recommend this to people that love bands like BOLT THROWER, early CELTIC FROST, CIANIDE, and CANDLEMASS. Great job guys.

Auf ihrer Internetpräsenz beschreiben SORROWFUL aus Göteborg das Material ihres Debütalbums namens “IN THE RAINFALL“ als klassischen Doom/Death Metal im Stile von Kapellen wie ANATHEMA oder MY DYING BRIDE zu Zeiten ihrer frühen Werke und stecken die Erwartungen an die neun Tracks der Platte mit einer solchen Aussage natürlich enorm hoch, gehörten die genannten Formationen in den 90er Jahren doch zu der absoluten Speerspitze des Genres. Das ehemals in Mexiko beheimatete Duo verspricht hiermit allerdings nicht zu viel, versprüht doch nicht nur das finstere Artwork den Charme der alten Tage.

Von der ersten Sekunde an orientieren sich SORROWFUL mit ihren Kompositionen recht nah an ihren britischen Idolen und offenbaren ein altbackenes und geradliniges Songwriting mit sowohl brachialen Riffkonstrukten, als auch schleppenden Downtempopassagen samt harmonischen Melodiebögen, die von gurgelnden Growls sowie vereinzelt gesprochenen Passagen begleitet werden. Das schwedische Gespann achtet also darauf, sein knapp dreiviertelstündiges Werk möglichst abwechslungsreich zu gestalten, sodass sich Songs wie “The Last Journey“ oder “Eager Of Death“ in einer melancholischen Elegie ergehen, während in “Utopian Existence“, “Gray People“ und “The Flight Of Mind“ rohe todesmetallische Klänge angestimmt werden, bei denen eine kraftvoll voranpreschende Doublebase nicht fehlen darf.

Somit ist “IN THE RAINFALL“ für eine erste Veröffentlichung grundsätzlich schon eine durchaus solide Angelegenheit und dennoch gehen SORROWFUL ein wenig zu sehr auf Nummer sicher. Zugegeben, die Truppe hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, den Geist des traditionellen Doom/Death Metals der alten Tage einzufangen und dies gelingt ihr mit den Tracks des Albums auch hervorragend. Es wäre dennoch schön gewesen, wenn die beiden Herren versucht hätten, einige weitere Elementen zu integrieren, um dem Langspieler eine eigene Note zu verleihen.

Für alle Genrefreunde dürfte “IN THE RAINFALL“ trotzdem ein willkommener Leckerbissen sein, den anzutesten es zweifelsohne lohnt. Besonders für die bevorstehenden trüben Herbsttagen liefert “IN THE RAINFALL“ den geeigneten Soundtrack.

A mexikói páros, Ishtar (dobok, gitár) és Vergara (ének, basszus) 2009-ben indította útjára a beszédes nevű Sorrowful zenekart. A két zenész leginkább hazai black hordákban fordult meg és talált egymásra, kitűzött céljuk mégis a korai death/doom világának felelevenítése lett az új formációval. Próbálkozásaik egy demót és egy split kiadványt szültek, ezután jegelték a projektet. A folytatásra már Svédországban került sor, két évvel később, így az európai elődök közelségével felvértezve vállalkozhattak egy teljes lemez kiadására, a stílusnak megfelelően Solitude háttérszéllel. Papírforma szerint a korai death metal, doom metal mocskos, ám étvágygerjesztő nászából táplálkozva (Anathema, My Dying Bride a kiadó szerint, szerintem nem…), blackes depresszióval átszőve kellett volna ennek a lemeznek megjelennie, így gyorsan le is csaptam rá, de ahogy nemzeti válogatottunknál is előfordul, hogy pár közmunkáról visszarendelt külföldi csapat elkalapálja, így én is tévedhetek.

A bizalomgerjesztő borító alatt a totális középszer bújik meg, amit lehet szeretni, utálni, de elismerni már nehezebben. A 9 dalt 44 percre osztották le nekünk, amiből kiderül, hogy nem a szokásos gigászi agymenéseket erőltetik a mexisvédek, de igazából a rövid dalokat sem tudták túl sok maradandóval feltölteni. Gitár alapú death/doom ez, viszonylag elcsépelt témákkal, egysíkú hörgéssel. Nyoma sincs igazán sötét hangulatnak, atmoszférának még a viszonylag eltalált régies hangzás ellenére sem, a borító ködös ígérete pedig a reggeli harmathoz hasonlóan foszlott vágyálommá. A kezdő The Last Journey után ugyan sokkal komolyabban veszik a death metalt /itt tévedett a kiadó/, úgyhogy a lemez célközönsége inkább a korai Cianide, Asphyx, Sorrow vonulat lehetett. Ezek a bandák anno száműzték köreikből a gótikus érzelgést, komolyabb mélabúskodást és inkább játszottak okos, lassú, kőkemény death metalt, mintsem doomot, amit csak eszközként használtak. Ez az irányzat a maga idejében sem volt a népszerűség csúcsán, ma meg aztán pláne, de mivel egy-két ilyen lemez nálam heti rendszerességgel pörög, így nagy meglepetések nem értek.
A rettentő lehangoló (és ezáltal értékelhető) kezdés után a Nothingness feleslegesen hosszú, pár hangos kezdése vár ránk, ezt oldják fel egy jó riffel és kissé kínos hörgéssel, majd old school death metalba váltanak. Ebből viszont jelenleg akkora a túlkínáltság, mint a keletről és délről érkező munkaerőből, ráadásul még egyszer végig kellett hallgatnom, mert nem tudtam elhinni, hogy egy ilyen nyúlfarknyi zúzdába nem tudtak belepréselni egy idegtépő szólót sem, pedig szinte sikított érte a szerzemény. A Gray People ugyanez középtempóval és némi sikeresen integrált skizofréniával, úgyhogy már jobban megfogott. A bíztatóan kezdődő Oceans Of Darkness is hamar belefullad az unalomba, a dal végi gyorsulással már nem tudták kimagyarázni a bizonyítványt. Az Utopian Existence olyan szerzeményekre emlékeztetett, amelyek alatt régen a másolt kazetta ropogását élvezhettem, de a zene minőségét illetően már nem fogott el annyira a nosztalgiaérzés. Amatőr ízének köszönhetően azonban ez a dal azért jól tudott esni. Frozen Sun: csak hogy ez se maradjon ki. Utopian folytatása egy jól eltalált, de rövid ideig használt riffel. A mélypontig a The Machine Of Desolation jutott el, ahol a bátrabb, szerencsés tempóváltásokat bátor, de annál szerencsétlenebb narráció (vagy tiszta ének, még nem tudtam eldönteni) kíséri, de egy dallamosnak szánt szóló is befigyel. A The Flight Of Mind egy egész jó régisulis death metal lett, aminek a végénél bedugva felejthették a gitárt és felimprovizáltak még pár akkordot. A záró Eager Of Death c. dalt nagyon megkedveltem és nem csak azért, mert lezárta ezt a lemezt. A rövid dalban volt hangulat, dallam, keménység és pár jó ötlet, amit máshonnan kifelejtettek.
Imádom a kiadók leírását olvasni, mert mindig bele lehet futni vicces dolgokba, persze ők csak a munkájukat végzik. Írtak koncepcióról, ami maximum a szövegekben jelentkezhet, de annyira nem izgatott, hogy utánanézzek, mert a zene inkább útkeresésnek mondható. A Sorrowful tipikusan olyan lemezt tett le nekünk az asztalra, amit onnan felemelve becsúsztatunk két klasszikus közé és csak véletlenül verünk le a polcról. Ilyenkor nyugtázzuk, hogy ez is megvan, ez is régisulis doom, de most inkább mást hallgatok…

Současní SORROWFUL mají sice aktuální sídlo ve Švédsku, ovšem jinak se jedná o hudebníky pocházející z Mexika, jenž našli svou uměleckou půdu v jedné z nejmetalovějších zemí světa. Trošku paradox, dost možná i nošení dříví do lesa, jak se u nás obvykle říká. Ovšem rozhodujícím kritériem je stejně hudba, a pokud bychom se měli zaměřit nejprve na žánr, kterým se dvojice Ishtar/Vergara zabývá, zastavit se musíme u stařičké formy death-doom metalu, jež ctí kořeny a ani v nejmenším si nedovoluje pošpinit jasně daná pravidla. Takhle to mají SORROWFUL nalinkováno a posluchači poperte se s tím! Jenže… když ono to od samého začátku jaksi drhne…

Nemůžu si pomoci, ale „ In The Rainfall“ od samého začátku nudí a nudí, a přestože jsem po celou dobu poslechu (ů) čekal na onen zlomový moment, jež by mě vtáhl do děje, nedočkal jsem se ho. Nekonfliktní death-doom metal staré školy, strnulý a víceméně bez atmosféry, žádné vzrušení, jen pouhá plytkost. A to mě krásně vypající obal tolik navnadil! Nemohu si pomoci, ale hudba SORROWFUL připomíná takové ty ukecané lidi, jež jsou hodiny schopni žvatlat o čemkoliv, ale stejně vám nic konkrétního nesdělí. Kruté, ovšem věřte mi, že jsem se u poslechu nahrávky celou dobu nehorázně ošíval, a to jsem si ji dovolil neošidit a dát ji šanci hned několikrát. Z mého úhlu pohledu však těžký průměr…

SorrowfulZa celých pětačtyřicet minut si nevybavuji moment, pod jehož silou by se mi rozklepala kolena, veškeré kytarové melodie jsou značně nepůvodní a předvídatelné, ostatní pak nemají dostatečně uchvacující feeling. Aranžmá skladeb pak také víceméně stačí jen na druhou garnituru (myslím, že v Česku máme daleko lepší kapely) a ne zrovna přesvědčivý dojem na mě udělal zvuk, byť tedy vzešel z jednoho nejmenovaného studia v Göteborgu. Vždyť i to retro se musí umět udělat. U „In The Rainfull“ mám ale pocit, jako kdyby celý matroš ležel dvacet let u ledu a nyní si někdo usmyslel, že ho vydá. Těžko říci, pro jakou skupinu posluchačů je vlastně určen. Nicméně finské či ruské kapely jsou v přesvědčivosti svých nahrávek mnohem a mnohem dál a SORROWFUL pro ně mohou představovat konkurenci jen stěží.

„In The Rainfall“ je hodně nešťastné album. Dvojice umělců si splnila svůj velký sen, vydala desku středně rychlých skladeb a tradičního murmuru, avšak při všem tom kuchtění zapomněla vystrčit hlavu z ulity a vnímat svět kolem sebe. Na jednu stranu se to sice může jevit jako záležitost poměrně romantická, hudebníci se navíc mohou být do prsou v tom smyslu, že je ze současného hudebního svět nic nezajímá, avšak pro posluchače tento přístup jaksi postrádá význam. Pro mě osobně tedy zklamání.

Généralement, quand des groupes choisissent de pratiquer le Doom Death Metal, ils aboutissent à un résultat relevant du Doom Metal pour la partie instrumentale et du Death Metal pour les vocaux.

A l'écoute du premier titre de ce tout premier album des Suédois de SORROWFUL, on se dit qu'on évolue dans ce schéma tout à fait classique : tempo plutôt lent, riffs mélancolique, rythmiques pesantes, chant caverneux. Tout cela est correctement maîtrisé et exécuté, à défaut de surprendre.

Quand bien même on retrouve sur d'autres compositions ce Doom Metal à chant Death, l'intérêt de « In The Rainfall » réside dans la prééminence de titres qui relève du Death Metal sur le plan instrumental, avec des séquences plus lentes et mélancoliques. C'est notamment le cas avec « Nothingness » qui débute lentement et sombrement, avant que la section rythmique ne propose une accélération bien lourde qui dénote un véritable goût pour la brutalité à l'ancienne.

A l'ancienne ? Oui, car SORROWFUL a le bon goût de s'inspirer du Death Metal suédois des origines, aux sonorités granuleuses et à l'approche directe. On évoque forcément l'approche massive et hostile des précurseurs UNLEASHED et GRAVE, histoire de donner une idée. Portées par une section rythmique dominée par une double grosse caisse sans pitié, les rythmiques raclent douloureusement et avancent sans coup férir.

La cohabitation harmonieuse entre ce type de Death Metal bien lourd et le versant Doom Metal classique à la CANDLEMASS (dans les riffs qui semblent pleurer et porter tout le désespoir du monde) fonctionne très bien, faisant de « In The Rainfall » un album efficace.

Esordio all’insegna di un death doom molto tradizionale per questa band di stanza a Göteborg, della quale attraverso i canali ufficiali non è che si sappia molto dei musicisti coinvolti.

Bisogna, quindi, attingere alla sempre utile Encyclopaedia Metallum per scoprire che i Sorrowful sono un duo messicano trasferitosi da tempo in Scandinavia composto da I.Ishtar e Jorge Vergara, con il primo, soprattutto, già molto attivo nella scena nordeuropea (facendosi valere in particolare con gli ottimi Dødsfall).
Si diceva di un lavoro devoto ai suoni tradizionali in voga negli anni ’90, quando My Dying Bride ed Anathema, soprattutto, tracciarono le linee guida di un genere che nel corso degli anni, come sempre accade, avrebbe assunto diverse ulteriori ramificazioni.
Il sound dei Sorrowful è sicuramente efficace in quanto completamente spogliato di qualsiasi orpello gotico e decadente, e questo alla fine costituisce un pregio, per l’indubbia coerenza ad uno stile che oggi non si può certo definite alla moda, ma anche un difetto in quanto, basando il tutto su un impatto piuttosto brutale, In The Rainfall mantiene una linearità apprezzabile ma che non sfocia mai in momenti davvero memorabili.
Il disco è comunque valido, ma mi sentirei di consigliarlo più agli estimatori del death caliginoso e rallentato (in stile Asphyx, direi) che non a chi, all’inizio degli anni ’90, si è beato di pietre miliari quali “As The Flower Withers” e “Serenades”.
Un buon growl, sorretto da riff pesantissimi e da qualche raro ma riuscito passaggio in chiave solista, sono il trademark di questi tre quarti d’ora di buona musica estrema, che ripropone in maniera appropriata quanto onesta quei suoni che ogni tanto è bene che vengano rispolverati.
I nostri dimostrano, pur se con parsimonia, di avere nelle corde anche quelle aperture melodiche capaci di rendere memorizzabili tracce altrimenti monolitiche nel loro incedere: a tale proposito si rivela emblematica l’ottima The Machine Of Desolation e in parte anche la successiva The Flight of Mind, mentre Gray People si staglia sul resto della tracklist con i suoi ritmi mortiferi che riportano, volendo restare in un ambito attuale, ai Vallenfyre di Greg Mackintosh.
Da rimarcare anche l’opener The Last Journey e Oceans of Darkness, brani nei quali i Sorrowful riescono a trovare un buonissimo equlibrio tra le diverse componenti del loro sound.
In definitiva, un disco interessante, soprattutto per chi apprezza maggiormente le partiture dolenti del doom quando sono sommerse da gragnuole di colpi inferti dalla furia del death.

Originally from León, Guanajuato, Mexico, the duo of I. Ishtar (Guitars and Drums) and Jorge Vergara (Vocals and Bass) relocated to Gothenburg, Sweden and have just released their first full length album on Solitude Productions.

I don’t know about you, but I picture Mexico as a sunny warm place and Sorrowful’s bleak and mournful doom death seems completely out of place. “The Last Journey” opens slowly with a steady drum thump and a melancholy, lethargic guitar riff, but it’s the ultra-slow death growl that really works at bringing home the lament they feel.

While “Nothingness” also feels like it is going to ever so slowly drag you into oblivion with its slow chuggy riffing and the occasional harmonic for emphasis, when all of sudden the drums kick into high gear with the guitars following suit. The vocals however maintain their lumbering pace as juxtaposition and anchor for the song.

“Gray People” has a definite Bolt Thrower feel to it with the super-fast kick drum and cutting snare sound, but slow and heavy guitars and growled vocals.

At first beautifully bleak and haunting, the guitars on “Oceans of Darkness” fill out as the riff becomes slightly more complex and winds over itself while the vocals remain unchanged.

For some reason, probably the slightly higher tone of the guitar, “Utopian Existence” is far more allegro and chirpy than the other tracks and it lightens the mood considerably as it plays on, but when the lead kicks in it takes things to a new level of lightness you didn’t think they could achieve.

Returning to the far slower more sombre sound of earlier in the album, “Frozen Sun” has plenty of sustained notes and false harmonics punctuating the riffs, however on “The Machine of Desolation” the drums increase the pace again forcing the guitar riffs to be even heavier to subdue them and bring them back in check.

“The Flight of Mind” is easily the fastest song on the album and definitely reminds me of early Bolt Thrower with the hyper fast drumming and guitars but laconic vocals being growled out at well below half-tempo. The lengthy lead runs up the fretboard escalating in pitch as it does so.

The final track, “Eager of Death” is more mid-tempoed with plenty of flair added to the guitar riffs to make them more colourful and interesting and a pleasant way to end the album.

Today has been the perfect day to be reviewing this album with the miserable English summer rain and dark clouds adding ambience to my turns of phrase.

After not paying much attention to new releases for a number of years, I came back to discover the Death/Doom scene in fantastic shape. It seemed like everywhere I looked were new bands mixing in exciting new elements and constantly pushing the boundaries of what was possible within the scene. Fortunate, perhaps, that I heard those bands first, and not Sorrowful, who very much do not fall into that category. What we get instead is something along the lines of Anathema’s debut, but with all the acoustic/clean guitars, female vocals and keyboard orchestrations muted. I consider ‘Serenades‘ to be a stone cold classic, and while it is nice to hear someone heavily referencing it rather than doing a straight copy as has been so often the case over the years, I feel that those elements that are missing were utterly key to what made it great, and I feel somewhat sorrowful (sorry!) at their absence.

Harsh words to open with, and I think I should state right now that for what it is, ‘In the Rainfall’ is actually a pretty solid, if thoroughly old-school, release. The Anathema influence is not actually as pronounced as it seems at first, but when those minor key harmonies kick in, it is hard not to just picture the young and fresh faced versions of the Cavanagh brothers in my head! There are plenty of fast (double kick) bits that really emphasise the Death part of the equation, and for me at least, these are the most enjoyable parts. Perhaps it is because I listen to a lot less Death Metal and therefore these bits don’t sound quite so cliché to my ears.

The songs are all along fairly similar lines, 4-5 minutes in length, a bit of harmonising, a bit of Death Metal, rinse, repeat. It is saved, fortunately, by the execution which is pretty spot on for the sound they are going for. It’s tight enough to sound nice and chunky, but without the gloss that would totally ruin it’s early 90’s atmosphere. The vocals rarely stray from the tried and tested death growl which sounds just fine too. The band is a two piece with an unusual split of Guitar/Drums and Bass/Vocals. I wouldn’t want to place a bet on which of the two instruments the Guitarist/Drummer favours, as he does a fantastic job of both.

As a short aside, I found the bands history a little interesting and worth mentioning. They actually formed in Mexico in 2009 before vanishing of the radar in 2012, before suddenly reappearing and reforming in Sweden in 2014. I personally have an image in my head of them rowing across the Atlantic over the course of the years in-between, all their gear packed away and ready to be redeployed upon their arrival. Pure fantasy I imagine, but it is a story I would like to hear nonetheless.

I actually think Sorrowful were probably a little unlucky that this landed on my desk, because I know a lot of people that would probably love this, but it just isn’t really something that I found exciting for the most part. There have actually been a couple of times when I have stuck it on and quite enjoyed it, but I really had to be in the right mood, and the times where I turned it off halfway through certainly outweighed those where I didn’t. It’s probably very much a personal taste thing, so don’t just take my word for it! It is certainly worth giving a listen to if you are a fan of the early works in the genre, as it pulls off a pretty good, if stripped back, facsimile.
