The long awaited full length album from Siberian (Russia) funeral doom metal band Station Dysthymia rises this conservative genre to a higher level. Inheriting the album name from the «The Nine Billion Names of God» by Arthur C. Clarke this unpredictable album crafted in traditions of funeral doom inters the area of science fiction combining musical genre with fictional scientific theories. The musicians themselves treat the main idea of the album as perspective of human personal tragedy at the background of the tragedy of human society as a whole which tends to self-destruction. This is the band’s vision of the story of the World’s end: solid guitar sound combined with growl in different emotional tones draw the senses of mankind fallen into apathy and drifting towards self-destruction. The dark soundscapes were created with help of Greg Chandler from Esoteric who performed mastering at his studio in UK, M. Hater and I. Stellarghost from Abstract Spirit appeared as guest musicians.

Поскольку группа STATION DYSTHYMIA из Новосибирска, то неудивительно, что в данном случае мы имеем дело с суровым и обстоятельным Funeral Doom Metal. Так и представляется церемония погребения в таежном безлюдном замороженном пространстве. Первый трэк "A Concrete Wall" растянулся почти на 35 минут, и за это время конечно перед глазами умирающего пронесется его жизнь не один раз… А для тех, у кого имеются какие-никакие жизненные планы, подобная тщательная разработка стиля вряд ли вызовет умиление. Таким образом, в рамках своего стиля - вполне достойно, и даже по-своему оригинально. Поклонники такой музыки останутся довольны. Остальным вряд ли стоит рекомендовать этот диск.

Overhead, Without Any Fuss, The Stars Were Going Out is as strange and almost bizarre record as it sounds. It is a four-tracker sophomore opus from Russian band Station Dysthymia. It comes more than four years after its predecessor, so I was excited to hear what these Russians have been spending their time on while being away from the scene.

These guys are playing a typical funeral doom where tracks are very lengthy and monotonous. Take for instance the opening monster song called “A Concrete Wall” which is not only a very long intro (app. 35 minutes!) but also filled with many strange sounds but none of those are packed with action. It is slow and with very little progression, almost like it’s taken from some old Star Trek movie or something. In other words it is slow, boring, monotonous and with slow progression.

Apart from this typical aforementioned funeral doom they also try to incorporate various other elements that are related to funeral doom. Thus, one can hear some minor psychedelic, drone and ambient black/death metal sounds.

The other tracks found on Overhead, Without Any Fuss, The Stars Were Going Out are not much different from the opening track. "Ichor" clocks in at over 18 minutes, and if it wasn’t for the cover I wouldn’t know where the first song stopped and second begun. Two closing tracks are closer to each other than anything else; entitled "Starlit - A Rude Awakening" and instrumental sibling "Starlit - We Rest At Last". Interesting enough, those two are easy to separate one from another.

The overall atmosphere is urban and spacy, and it is very listenable. Song-writing is equally skilful and at the top of it – these guys know how to handle their instruments. Even the cover artwork perfectly reflects the musical content of this CD and its core concept.
I almost felt in sleep twice while listening to this album, and only one listening was enough. However, if you’re die-hard fan of the genre or/and a Science Fiction literature then this opus might interest you.

Ralentir le tempo, comme le battement d'un cœur à l'agonie. Espacer chaque souffle...comme si le prochain tenait de la surprise ou d'un effet de suspens. Station Dysthymia arrive avec cet album comme la promesse du crépuscule des temps. Je me prends depuis quelques temps d'amour (non suicidaire) pour le funeral doom, et les dernières sorties que je reçois ont un trait commun: la Russie. Mais que se passe-t-il donc là-bas? Je n'irais pas me perdre dans des considérations géographiques ou sociologiques. Par contre, il y a peut être une explication: Solitude Productions. Un label qui donne une chance à ses artistes d'avoir des échos au delà de leurs frontières. C'est donc grâce à ça que nous découvrons de plus en plus la richesse d'une scène qui existait, mais à laquelle nous n'avions pas facilement accès. Pour une fois que la mondialisation a du bon! A première vue, je m'attendais à un format court. Il n'y a que quatre titres, mais en fait c'est bien d'un album dont il s'agît. Rien que le premier morceau dure plus de trente minutes! Mais bon je suis habitué à ces formats, nourris aux bons vieux disques de prog qui duraient une heure pour trois morceaux... Nous avons ici plus d'une heure de lente décrépitude, souvent magnifique, parfois éprouvante. J'ai adoré ce disque car il ne fait pas que contenter les oreilles. Il sort de son cadre pour engourdir vos membres, votre esprit. A son écoute, on suffoque parfois. Mais chaque morceau sait aussi nous sortir de ses espaces claustrophobes. L'atmosphère lourde se veut parfois angoissante, ce dès le début de "A concrete wall". Evocation du vide, de l'espace, les dimensions infinies sont souvent plus inquiétantes que les espaces réduits. S'inspirant d'Arthur C. Clarke nos chers russes puisent l'inspiration de leurs angoisses dans l'anticipation, la science-fiction et les dérives scientifiques... Il est difficile de décrire ce premier titre de par ses dimensions étendues comme les distances entre les étoiles. Mais à son écoute j'ai lentement dérivé, très lentement, pris à la gorge. Voilà pourquoi j'ai adoré, leur musique m'a absorbé, s'en est devenue une expérience physique et psychique, une épreuve. Après la première dizaine de minutes nous sommes pris comme dans un brouillard stellaire perturbé d'ondes radio, autant de bruits étranges. Un passage quasi Floydien (si on pense à "Echoes" par ex). Quand le titre reprend sa trame vers la dix-septième minute, c'est émotionnellement très fort et musicalement très puissant. Growls du fond des astres, batterie lourde, riffs telluriques...la fin du (gros) morceau est aussi hallucinée, avec ces cris au loin, comme ceux d'humains sur une planète agonisante. "Ichor" fait plus court, la moitié du premier...soit dix-huit minutes. Mais quand on est entré dedans, on ne voit plus le temps de la même façon. Peut être la relativité? En tout cas on avance, si avancer veut encore dire quelque chose, dans la même ambiance. Preuve de l'unité et de la cohérence du disque. Ce second titre est magnifique, avec ses liaisons à l'ebow. "Starlit - A rude awakening" est moins espacé, plus massif et chargé. Il exprime parfaitement le titre, les phases qu'il suggère comme avec ce passage vers la cinquième minute évoquant le doute. Puis soudain le morceau après la sixième minute se met en branle et part au galop...pas pour longtemps. L'effet est très intéressant ainsi que le sens qu'il développe. Ce disque s'écoute, et s'interprète. Je n'ai pas cité d'influences, elles seront évidentes mais feront plutôt figure de filiation. Funeral doom ne résume d'ailleurs pas toute l'expérience car s'il y a bien une chose qui ressort, c'est qu'au delà du style le groupe exprime une pensée qu'on ne peut résoudre à un genre. Cet album est avant tout une œuvre personnelle, profonde et sincère. "Starlit - We rest at last" confirmera les impressions. La musique de Station Dysthymia parle, c'est pour ça qu'ils peuvent sur ce titre se passer des mots. Sortie d'album magistrale, mélodies sublimes comme la b.o de la plus grande exode de l'humanité, le thème final sonne tel le générique de fin de notre histoire.

Jeśli komuś wydaje się, że ekstremizm funeral doom metalu ograniczony jest jakimiś barierami i dalej niż UNHOLY, SKEPTICISM, ESOTERIC, EA, ABSTRACT SPIRIT czy COLLOSEUM (R.I.P.) iść nie można, niech wsłucha się w pierwszy utwór z debiutanckiego albumu kolejnej pochodzącej z Nowosybirska kapeli STATION DYSTHYMIA. Prawie 35-minutowy kolos o tytule „A Concrete Wall” dosłownie roztrzaskuje czaszkę swoim niesamowitym ciężarem, a jednocześnie wprowadza w totalnie zeschizowany nastrój. Po pierwszych dziesięciu minutach zdawać by się mogło, że Rosjanie skupiają się na budowaniu zróżnicowanej kompozycji, w której są wszelkie atuty stojące za jednak tradycyjną, funeralową muzą, ale potem zaczyna dominować totalna improwizacja z wybrzmiewaniem dźwięków i nakręcaniem surrealistycznego klimatu do granic abstrakcji, a dla niektórych wręcz absurdu. Podczas tej transowej podróży wpadłem na pomysł określenia tego, co gra STATION DYSTHYMIA mianem ‘psychodelicznego funeral doom’u’, bo jazda jest już całkowicie po bandzie z wszelkimi tego konsekwencjami w postaci nadciągającego nieuchronnie szaleństwa i umysłowych perturbacji. Czterej Rosjanie wiele się nauczyli od swoich ciut starszych kolegów z COMATOSE VIGIL, ABSTRACT SPIRIT i im podobnych, bowiem wątek obłędu pociągnęli jeszcze dalej w rozszalałej końcówce z paranoicznymi wrzaskami, za które odpowiadają M. Hater i I. Stellarghost z ABSTRACT SPIRIT. W pewnym momencie zapomina się o tym, że to rzecz jednak z kręgów metalowych, ponieważ atmosfera staje się po prostu przerażająca i grożąca opętaniem, choć momentami nie brakuje tu tylko pozornie spokojnych, z lekka akustycznych fragmentów utrzymanych w zdołowanej estetyce fińskiego UNHOLY, natomiast te zwielokrotniane różnymi efektami dźwięki budujące tło dla odjechanych solówek w końcówce to już czysta inspiracja ESOTERIC. W dalszym utworach te wpływy są dalej słyszalne, choć formy nie są już tak rozciągnięte w czasie. W początkowej fazie „Ichor” można wyłapać coś ze starego WINTER, może też DISEMBOWELMENT czy THERGOTHON, ale z czasem przestrzenność i na wpół akustyczne dysonanse razem z klekoczącym zgrabnie basem budują już zdecydowanie bardziej funeralową rzeczywistość z tym co charakteryzuje wspomniany już ESOTERIC, czyli długimi pasażami gitary solowej i organicznie pływającymi dźwiękami. W „Starlit: A Rude Awakening” jest nawet coś w rodzaju przyswajalnej melodyki, ale trzeba tutaj mimo wszystko uważać, bo wokal mruczy złowieszczo, a ciężaru też nie brakuje. Dziewięćipółminutowy kawałek przemyka jednak stosunkowo szybko, ale nie brakuje w nim oczywiście interesujących i zeschizowanych patentów, co ma swoją kontynuację w instrumentalnym „Starlit: We Rest At Last”, które jest jak to światełko w tunelu i daje nadzieję, że przynajmniej w grobach spoczywać będziemy w spokoju… ;) Jednak tak jak ciężko i z mozołem rozpoczyna się ten album, tak też się kończy. Fanom funeral doom oraz przywoływanych wcześniej kapel ten materiał zdecydowanie powinien się spodobać. Mnie również sponiewierał rzetelnie ;).

E bizarr elnevezés egy orosz funeral doom triót takar. Az oroszok az utóbbi években nagyon ráéreztek erre a komor műfajra, kifejezetten sokan művelik ezt arrafelé. Biztos sokak lelkivilága rímel erre a zord zenére a nagy pusztákon. Az Overhead… a második album, az első (Only Gray Days) 2009-ben jelent meg. Borzasztó hosszú (72 perc), vontatott utazásra készüljön fel az, aki úgy dönt, meghallgatja a lemezt. Igazából a funeral doom egy elem az albumon hallhatók közül; leginkább egy elnyújtott kísérletezésnek nevezném az Overheadet, melyben doom riffek, pszichedelikus kísérletek, hangulatbetétek hallhatók, de úgy, hogy sokszor olyan érzésem volt, hogy a tagok épp azt játsszák, ami eszükbe jut.
Szerkezetet nehezen fedeztem fel a lemezen, nem ártott volna kissé „megfésülni” ezt az anyagot, mert vannak jó elképzelései a zenekarnak, csak éppen nincs megkonstruálva az anyag, nem látni a „honnan hová” törekvését.
A hangzás kifejezetten jó, és a hangulat is megvan. Ami nincs, az az átgondoltság és a saját hang.

It takes some time to get into some records - this is not the first, nor the last example. Among these are many records by “Solitude Productions” - they release a lot and the bands with their genres and creativity are sometimes nearly indistinguishable. However, Station Dysthymia from Novosibirsk is somewhat different in this case. While their music falls under Funeral Doom label, it has some subtle waves of Drone music, not as depressing as Sunn O))), but lighter, more appealing. Furthermore, the music was influenced and enhanced with elements of Post-Rock.
The band’s second album, “Overhead, without any Fuss, the Stars were Going out” sounds really good. The music is slow, melancholic and heavy enough for my liking. Mesmerizing even. Frequent guitar effects, creating ample different aural installations. Maybe this is the reason why the album’s first track “A Concrete Wall” (a very decent title as the composition grows into a pure wall of sound) is more than 30 minutes long. Another nice touch was the unexpected increase of drum pace in the beginning of “Starlit: a Rude Awakening” (once again, a great name - maybe that moment is the reflection of the “awakening”).
All in all, while there aren’t plenty of original solutions and innovations, and there is a lack in variety and dynamics, it certainly has its own great and memorable aspects as well as the mood and atmosphere, which this evening resonated well with my own magnetic field.

Aus den Tiefen Sibiriens entsteigt STATION DYSTHYMIA empor, um mit Overhead, Without Any Fuss, The Stars Were Going Out das Land in eisige Kälte zu tauchen. Das Quartett aus Nowosibirsk fühlt sich im langsamen Funeral Doom heimisch, der über lange Strecken des Albums ausschließlich instrumental daherkommt. Die Russen investieren viel Zeit in den atmosphärischen Aufbau der Songs, so dass die volle Doom-Breitseite nicht permanent aus allen Rohren feuert. Melancholische Gitarrenmelodien gibt es am laufenden Band, die eine morbide Faszination versprühen. Der Gesang lässt den Hörer beim ersten Erklingen ebenfalls erstarren, so tief und dämonisch wie die Stimme hier ihre unheilvollen Zeilen verkündet. Letztlich erschöpfen sich die vier Titel jedoch irgendwann mangels an Vielfalt, so dass die Gruppe in den ruhigen und minimalistisch gehalten Parts ihr volle Wirkung entfaltet. Allein aus dem 35-minütigen Opener „A Concrete Wall“ machen andere Bands ein ganzes Album.

Такой сегодня выдался день – сплошной андеграундный экстрим. Как говорили злые польские дэз-думеры Zaraza на своём альбоме 97го года с вызывающим названием “Slavic Blasphemy”: “Everyday is a funeral!” И, слава Богу, это было только литературный приём, хотя, если взглянуть иначе – сущая правда. Поляки давно уже сидят в Канаде и едят оладьи с клюквенным сиропом, а на doom-фронте за них отдуваются другие. Например, Station Dysthymia, они из Новосибирска. Собрались в 2007 году, в 2009 издали дебютную запись, которая не то чтобы осталась незамеченной… ну прошла да и что уж там. К 2011 году накопилось материала на четыре песни, а для funeral’а, как вы знаете, это уже победа, и в 2013 этот материал увидел свет. Мужики нарыли для альбома крутую обложку, взяли для него мощнейшее название по мотивам увлекательного произведения Артура Кларка "Девять миллиардов имён Бога" и, что характерно, подготовили действительно любопытные, качественные композиции. К несчастью для меня, первый же трек “Concrete Wall” имеет чудовищную, в 35 минут, продолжительность. Но это не так плохо – его не скучно слушать. Бас-гитарист Station Dysthymia в своём интервью нашему порталу буквально говорил следующее: "Мы выходцы из холодного, атмосферного и пестрящего институтами и гаражами Новосибирского Академгородка, и атмосфера этого места очень сильно на нас повлияла. Проект задумывался как некий гимн снежным ночным улицам, прокуренным тёмным комнатам и городскому одиночеству". Не спорю, что-то от этого в “Overhead, Without Any Fuss the Stars Were Going Out” есть, но сам альбом далёк от такой местечковой привязанности, он масштабен и, стыдно сказать, эпичен. Первая композиция сходу показывает, что работа над созданием тонких настроений альбома ("атмосферности") проделана серьёзная: делает своё дело и тяжёлое акустическое вступление, инструментальная метафора к одиночеству, тьме, пустоте, и мрачный (а каким ещё ему быть?) чистый вокал, нараспев произносящий как заклинание одну фразу, холодное гитарное звучание и тот "дико крутой основной рифф, на который отлично ложится гитарный лид, уходящий в фидбэк". Сюжетная линия разворачивается долго, но следить за её развитием было не скучно, и по вокальной части есть замечание – в некоторых моментах гроул восхитителен, по-хорошему эмоционален, в то время как у некоторых групп он звучит ровно на протяжении всего альбома. “Concrete Wall” заканчивается в кромешном безумии, свойственном больше Esoteric, но у Station Dysthymia нагрузку по созданию этого настроения скорее несут сэмплы, нежели искажённый вихрь мутировавшего потока гитарного звука, как у британцев. Кстати, сведением альбома занимался Грег Чандлер, лидер банды эзотериков, и вероятно это тоже один из секретов Station Dysthymia. На втором треке “Ichor” мужчины наступают на горло своим принципам и делают успех, сократив продолжительность композиции до 18 минут, и как-то без спешки растекаются скорбной мыслию по древу, продолжая витиевато давить свои "похоронным роком". Из новых идей заметил только очень скромное использование "хэмонда", но, положившись на некоторое композиторское чутьё, авторы не стали им злоупотреблять. Медленно копошась дисторшированным телом в грязи, новосибирский музыкальный монстр ползёт дальше… “Starlit: A Rude Awakening” для меня стал этакой funeral-балладой, но совершенно неожиданно темп мелодии вырос, и вот вам коротенькая, сыгранная на высоком темпе реприза с "лёгкими" ударными и чуть более позитивно звучащей гитарой. Замыкающая альбом инструменталка “Starlit: We Rest At Last” привела меня к тому, что я вывел крамольный, уродливый термин “post funeral doom metal”, очевидно, причина этому в том, что гитары "недозагружены", и эй! – это как раз то, что мне сегодня под конец дня было нужно. Лично мне сегодня Station Dysthymia показали, что funeral бывает разный, а “Overhead, Without Any Fuss the Stars Were Going Out” стал для меня одним из трёх лучших funeral альбомов уходящего года. Ну и вспомним напоследок, что к работе приложил руку Чэндлер, а также… гм, совсем забыл про это. Какая же у нас, тысяча чертей, дружная сцена… а также M.Hater и I.Stellarghost из Abstract Spirit. Отмечу отсутствие лишней агрессивности на альбоме – материал умеренно экстремален, жёсток, мрачен, но без негатива, с долей аналитики, я бы сказал. Не понимаю, почему Свен в своём Doom Metal Front поставил альбому 6 баллов, где-то Свен ошибся, надо будет ему как-нибудь втащить…

Pure Nothing Worship

Station Dysthymia is a young Russian funeral doom quartet that grasps it’s inspiration from the urban depression and melancholy of everyday life. "Overhead, Without Any Fuss, The Stars Were Going Out" is their second album and also the first released on Solitude Productions. The first album is self released and this Russian publisher saw their qualities and released their second album. The album is opened by a magnificent composition “A Concrete Wall” which lasts for an incredible 35 minutes!! “A Concrete Wall “ contains a bunch of heavy riffs, screams, growl vocals, sick samples and all that which surrounds us while we walk alone through the somber town late at night. On this song the guest is Hater whom we know from the band Abstract Spirit and others. The gentleman mentioned above delivered to the suicidal atmosphere of this track with his inhuman screams. After this long trip we hear the first moments of the track “Ichor”. In these 18 minutes Station Dysthymia don’t deliver anything encouraging – monolithic riffs, keyboards that make the atmosphere all the more dark and sick, darkness of our own minds, slow, dirge-like tempo and all of it spiced with deep growls. The album is closed with two nine minute tracks done in the similar way as the two before. It is a bitter taste in the throat after these 72 minutes of heavy and somber music. Maybe you will ask yourself if it is worth it to survive in this disgusting world…Embrace the end!

Дебютник этой российской команды вышел в 2009 году и остался практически незамеченным, и это понятно, ибо оный был выпущен самиздатом. На второй альбом им как-то удалось раскрутить российский лейбл Solitude Productions, и вот уже диск на прилавках магазинов. Исполняют сибиряне funeral doom metal со всего его последствиями, т.е. всё мрачно, депрессивно и уныло. "Сами музыканты основные идеи альбома видят в преломлении личной трагедии человека в трагедии всего человеческого общества, направившего себя на путь саморазрушения. Это описание конца Мира, как его видит группа: гитарный плотный звук в сочетании с гроулом в различных звуковых и эмоциональных тонах рисуют чувства человечества, впавшего в апатию и идущего к самоуничтожению" - гласит пресс-релиз. Оформление диска правда несколько бредовое, но вот сведение и мастеринг от Грега Чандлера (ESOTERIC) - тут конечно же всё на высоте. В остальном, всё на любителя. как музыка так и лирика. Даже участие клавишницы I. Stellarghost и вокалиста M. Hater (оба из ABSTRACT SPIRIT и TWILIGHT IS MINE) особо не спасает ситуацию, материал не особо цепляет тут. Только для самых упёртых фэнов похоронной музыки.
