The second album of project of the talented musician Ryan reveals new masterpiece of symphonic funeral doom metal! "Shadows Over The Cosmos" has a potential to become a master form of the genre along with best pieces of such bands as Colosseum and Ea: five endless tracks of majestic funeral doom filled with cold enigma and infinity of Cosmos. Работоспособности и креативности Раяна, который стоит за THE HOWLING VOID - можно только позавидовать, ведь кроме упомянутого проекта он ещё участвует в таких коллективах как HORDES OF THE MORNING STAR, INTESTINAL DISGORGE, NORMPETERSON и других. Его новое творенье под названием "Shadows over the Cosmos" - безусловно, порадует всех любителей такого стиля как симфонический funeral doom metal. Все пять композиций, окутанных загадочной атмосферой мистики будут держать вас на протяжении всего альбома длиною почти в час. Причем THE HOWLING VOID, в отличие от подобных групп типа COLOSSEUM или SHAPE OF DESPAIR, куда менее тяжелый для восприятия и слушается легко и непринуждённо. Пару слов про оформление альбома. На обложке присутствует картина русского художника XIX века Фёдора Васильева "Оттепель". Довольно примечательный факт. Ну, а сам диск, сделанный с золотым напылением и пит-артом - выглядит просто убийственно. Не пропустите.

IN-CRO-YABLE ! Pincez-moi, je rêve. Réception d’un album de funeral doom provenant d’un label Russe (Solitude prod, qui est surement LE label de référence doom), avec THE HOWLING VOID, qui dès que l’on insère l’album dans le lecteur, n’en fini plus de nous émouvoir avec ce doom typique du nord de l’Europe, voir des pays de l’Est. Mais que neni, tenez vous bien, ce groupe vient des vaches à cornes du Texas, USA. Non, pas de banjo, d’harmonica ou de guitare folk ici, on est en plein doom d’une puissance et d’une noirceur déroutante, l’Amérique n’a décidément pas fini de nous surprendre…

Alors si le contenu peut faire penser à des groupes comme Skepticism, à savoir un metal lourd, très lourd, puissamment sombre et lugubre, avec une voix venu d’outre tombe car très death, il faut noter ici également le coté super mélancolique qui fait la force de se second opus. Grâce à des notes ici ou là de guitares, de synthé, le seul protagoniste Ryan (car oui, c’est ici un one man band mais on ne s’en serait jamais douté si la bio était passé à la trappe) marque une très forte présence de mélodies larmoyantes à souhait. Bruit de pluie, ambiances atmosphériques opaques, on se noie dans un mélange à fleur de peau, entre ténèbres et douceur romantique, entre noirceur et mélodies qui pourrait faire pleurer le plus impitoyable black metalleux. On regarde les secondes s’écouler comme on regarderait un sablier, les minutes sont longues, on sait que la fin est proche, que le suicide peut guetter à tout moment, mais dont l’espoir reste en filigrane grâce aux mélodies apportées tout au long. Etrange sentiment que cet album en réalité. Plongés dans une extrême noirceur, on se met à planer…
Le temps est suspendu pour environ une heure. Certes ceux qui n’aiment pas le doom risquent de partir en courant, et pourtant ils auront bien tord car c’est une vraie pièce de musique, au sens noble du terme. Arrangements "aux petits oignons", breaks entre doom metal et ambiances planantes, une production parfaite, un artwork qui colle à l’esprit, bref, une pièce majeure pour tout collectionneur digne de ce nom. Le seul petit point négatif – pour certains - pourrait peut-être la redondance ou le trop plein de mélodies neo-romantiques mais superposé à cette opacité ambiante, cela reste pour moi un atout.

Mode d’emploi pour écouter cet opus : mettez l’album tard le soir, éteignez toutes les lumières, allongez vous dans le canapé, et laissez vous happer. Un voyage dans l’au delà dont vous ne reviendrez peut-être pas, en tout cas chapeau bas l’artiste, qui a mis ici sa main de fer dans un gant de velours. Délicieux.

Fin dal bellissima copertina, opera del pittore russo Feodor Vasiliev (1850-1873), questa seconda opera targata The Howling Void, one-man band americana portata avanti da Ryan, mette subito in chiaro gli intenti: decantare il vuoto che ci circonda, l'ombra che ottenebra il creato. Intenti che si materializzano in un funeral doom maestoso, sinfonico, che si dipana attraverso cinque lunghe tracce lentissime. Siderale, per certi versi cosmico, il suono di "Shadows Over The Cosmos" ha anche un non tanto latente accento psichedelico, ma è certo la compenete stilisticamente doom a caratterizzarlo nella sua interezza. Il growl di Ryan è a tutti gli effetti un fantsma che si aggira tra i brani plasmandosi con il resto, un magma nero e funereo nobilitato da chitarra ipersatura e downtuned, da ritmiche dilatatissime e da un tappeto orchestrale onnipresente che santifica il songwriting. C'è poco da aggiungere, sinceramente. Le sensazioni che si avvertono sono tante, le atmosfere e le immagini evocate anche. Siamo difronte ad un lavoro nato da una condizione interiore intensa e disperata, ne sono certo. Un lungo, lento, estenuante lugubre lamento che si materializza pienamente uscendo dai diffusori sotto forma di concretezza artistica. Come il quadro di Vasiliev, come una poesia decadente, come un requiem musicato e destinato ad essere ricordato per il tempo a venire.

Если вы все еще находитесь в мучительном поиске музыки для своих похорон, и не знаете на чем остановиться: то ли выбрать PANTHEIST, то ли отдать предпочтение COMATOSE VIGIL, а не то ткнуть пальцем в кого-нибудь из финских мастеров оркестрового погребения (благо их там, что мух на базарной площади в летний полдень), но при этом непременно хотите, чтобы все звучало мрачно, пафосно и симфонично, то можете попробовать соригинальничать и посмотреть за океан. Там вот как раз проект THE HOWLING VOID разродился своим вторым альбомом, который ничуть не напоминает тамошних мастеров заупокойной службы a la EVOKEN или каких-нибудь ASUNDER. Заведующий этой ритуальной конторой явно предпочитает европейский погребальный обряд, наполняя свои работы мрачными оркестровками, квазиорганной торжественностью и заупокойным мелодизмом. Все из-под его рук выходит чинно, аккуратно и ухоженно, как то и полагается при проводах в последний путь лиц, заслуживших особые почести. Если же вы пока к таким не относитесь – не расстраивайтесь. Можно ведь и помечтать. Представьте – лежите вы в лакированном гробу, в шикарном костюме и туфлях от Gucci, заваленный живыми цветами и медленно движетесь на орудийном лафете, запряженном шестеркой вороных коней. А в воздухе плывет строгая мелодия “Shadows over the Cosmos” и медленный ритм ее возносит грешную душу к небесам. Тяжелые гири гитарных риффов, словно печатающий шаг почетный караул, поддерживают сию невидимую субстанцию в полете, а нечасто вступающий скорбный рык подобен гласу плакальщика. Лепота!
То, что музыка THE HOWLING VOID не слишком оригинальна – не так уж важно. Благо сделан альбом на весьма приличном уровне, и цели своей достигает. Нет, на похоронах играть ему будет рановато – все-таки пожить еще немного хочется, но вот отправить душу в астрал этак на часок этой музыке вполне под силу. Если, конечно, фэнов дум-метал не испугает ставка Райана на синтезаторное звучание, подчас в ущерб гитарному звуку. Нет, привычные уху думстера риффы на альбоме присутствуют, а порой американец сподабливается и на длинные гитарные фразы, но даже альбомы SHAPE OF DESPAIR по сравнению с «Тенями над Космосом» выглядят образцом тяжести. Не знаю, задумывалось ли так изначально, или это результат записи в домашней студии, но я против подобного саунда ничего против не имею. Скорее, наоборот, именно благодаря ему пластинка американца запоминается и выделяется из ряда ей подобных. А при том количестве музыки, что имеется сегодня – это уже немало.

1 czerwca 2010 roku miała swoją premierę druga pełna płyta amerykańskiego THE HOWLING VOID. Pora może nie najlepsza na wydawanie potężnego, mrocznego, symfonicznego funeral doom metalu, jednak przegapienie tej pozycji dla każdego fana mistycznych, majestatycznych, ponurych i na swój sposób melodyjnych dźwięków byłoby pewnym faux pas. Tworzący tę jednoosobową orkiestrę R (Ryan) to zwolennik misternego budowania odpowiedniego, na ogół nasyconego przestrzennością klimatu, układania dźwięków będących następstwem pewnego fundamentu, na którym powstają długie, melodyczne, instrumentalne pasaże, a wokale są kolejnym instrumentem wzmagającym atmosferę niepokoju i obrazującym niedosiężne bezkresy Natury. Można to bez obaw odnieść do przywoływanych przez wydawcę dwu innych kapel: COLOSSEUM i EA, podobnie zresztą jak stylistykę muzyczną, w jakiej porusza się THE HOWLING VOID. Na "Shadows Over the Cosmos" można dzięki tym wszystkim środkom odczuć głębię i nieskończoność Wszechświata, a jeszcze bardziej uwypuklają to te bardziej ambientowe, oparte głównie na transowych klawiszach fragmenty. Najbardziej wyczuwalne jest to w instrumentalnym, właściwie całkowicie klawiszowym "The Hidden Sun", ale pozostałe utwory też w dużej mierze wykorzystują balans między mocno uwypukloną elektroniką a wysmakowanymi partiami gitar, które od strony melodycznej przypominają także dokonania fińskiego SWALLOW THE SUN i (chwilami) MY DYING BRIDE, zaś atmosferą zbliżają się chwilami do dokonań prawdziwych klasyków doom'u z UNHOLY. Doskonałym przykładem takiej równowagi jest numer tytułowy, w którym w świetny sposób skondensowane zostały wszystkie te elementy. Duża w tym zasługa również naprawdę dobrze wyważonego soundu, który w niczym nie ustępuje najlepszym produkcjom spod znaku monumentalnego doom metalu. Jedyne zarzuty, jakie mogę skierować pod adresem tego wydawnictwa są takie, że Ryan mógł postarać się o nieco większy nacisk na partie gitar (klawisze czasem nad nimi zanadto dominują, choć można to też pojąć jako świadomy zamysł twórcy) oraz różnorodność motywów przewodnich w rozbiciu na poszczególne kompozycje. Niektóre pomysły się powielają w następujących po sobie utworach. Nie mogę z tego względu uznać "Shadows Over the Cosmos" za totalny majstersztyk, ale za jazdę obowiązkową dla wszystkich fanów funeral doom metalu zdecydowanie tak.

A Solitude nevű orosz kiadó rendre adja ki az ismeretlen, de ízig-vérig minőségi doom metalt játszó zenekarok lemezeit. Már jó pár meglepetéssel meg tudtak örvendeztetni, és rengetegszer ajánlottam kiadványaikat másoknak is.
Szerencsére most sincs másképp, ez a korong is elismerésre méltó mű. Kicsit nyers, itt-ott kicsit csiszolatlan, de akkor is igényes munka. A projekt egyetlen személy munkája, aki a R művésznevet használja, és Texas-ban él. Az összes felvételt és keverést egymaga csinálta, és a végeredmény hallva elismeréssel adózom neki.

A számok nagy része nincs 12 perc alatt, így összesen 5 került fel belőlük a CD-re.
Az egyetlen kivétel az 5 perces The hidden sun, mely egy instrumentális tétel, zongorajátékkal és minimális egyéb hangszín aláfestésként való felhasználásával. A zene alapvetően követi az atmoszférikus doom metal sémáit: lassú, mélyre hangolt monoton dallamvezetés, síri hörgéssel, melyet végig atmoszférikus szintidallamok támogatnak. A The Howling Void esetében ezek a hangulatteremtő szintis témák sokkal fajsúlyosabban vannak jelen, mint a hasonló bandáknál általában, és ez hatalmas erőssége az egész anyagnak.
Sajnos gyenge pontként meg kell említeni, hogy a rövidebb néha jobb. Alapvetően nincs bajom a terjedelmesebb hangvételű, 10 perc fölötti számokkal, de itt néha kicsit túl monotonná vált a megegyező dallamrészek folyamatos ismételgetése, minimális változtatásokkal. Egy 2-3 percet simán le lehetne rövidíteni az összes track-et, és akkor simán elkerülhető lenne ez az effekt.

A Shadows over the Cosmos lemez is egy olyan Solitude kiadvány, melyet bátran merek ajánlani bárkinek. Az atmoszférikus, mély doom zenét kedvelőknek mindenképpen.

Als wдre ich in letzter Zeit nicht schon zur Genьge mit toller Musik bombardiert worden, treten THE HOWLING VOID in mein Leben und lassen die blitzend heiЯen Sommersonnenstrahlen zu kalten Lichtbringern verkьmmern. Aufgenommen in den letzten Rauhnдchten, sprьht das Album - wie ьbrigens auch der sehr genieЯbare Vorgдnger - vor lauter Schwдrze und Charakter, dass einem die Trдnen kommen.

Irgendwo zwischen ESOTERIC, DISEMBOWELMENT [allerdings wiederum nicht so extrem tief gestimmt] sowie AHAB angesiedelt, setzt "Shadows Over The Cosmos" alle Karten auf allumfassende Dьsternis, majestдtisch und schleichend zelebriert. GroЯartiger Abwechslung bedarf es nicht wirklich, denn dafьr stimmt das Gesamtbild einfach zu sehr: Erdrьckend schwere Gitarren, groЯteils geleitet von weinenden Leads, spдrlicher Gesang - gepaart mit der schцnsten Hintergrund Keyboardunterstьtzung, die ich in den letzten Monaten, wenn nicht sogar Jahren vernehmen durfte. Mit welchen Endzeit-Klanglandschaften hier aufgefahren wird... ein Traum. Zeitlos erhabene Dramatik ohne Kдse. Alles flieЯt beispiellos herrlich zusammen, die handwerkliche wie auch inhaltliche Arbeit ist vorbildlich. Beispiele zu geben, hieЯe, Eulen nach San Antonio zu tragen.

THE HOWLING VOID haben das, wonach ich suche: Magie. Hier findet man sie in Unmengen, wie Trockeneis, das laufend aus den Boxen weht. Was fьr ein Album!

The Howling Void is the brain-child of Ryan, who is also known for his work in Hordes of the Morning Star, Intestinal Disgorge and Normpeterson, all quite varied bands. The Howling Void was started in 2007 and this is the second album from the band, an eerie and majestic piece of symphonic Funeral Doom Metal. This albums contains all which one could expect for an Funeral Doom album, slow and depressive riffing, heavy and dark riffing, epic and majestic keyboards, eerie and nihilistic melodies, monotone and tormented vocals. And it is done with confidence and conviction and great skill. This is a must for all into slow, heavy and desolate music.

This very recent release of US based funeral symphonic doom act The Howling Void is one of the most powerful albums that I’ve heard this year in terms of creating an encapsulating ominous and 100% isolationist atmosphere. This is definitely the epitome of the sound of tragedy and despair, eternal suffering and longing for someone or even death. With most of the tracks clocking in at almost fifteen minutes a piece you can be sure that you will have very little difficulty in being absorbed into this deserted world of pure despondent emotions, like being deserted in a vast wasteland of absolutely nothing, not even a mirage to keep you company.

When something is labeled DOOM, I expect and look forward to this depressive and heavy sound, the sound of your breath shortening from the weight of the burdens of life, the feel of drowning in ones regrets and emotions that amass like an ocean and intend to swallow you whole. On “Shadows Over The Cosmos” you get exactly what the title suggests, there’s no light at the end of the tunnel here as the entire universe is consumed by shadows and sadness. All of us need a break from our groovy and rhythmic doom to take a deep journey into another dimension or universe of gloom and despair at times, especially when looking to unwind after a long week or day and just disappear altogether, and this is the ideal soundtrack to accompany you on that treacherous voyage.

In terms of sound you can expect something along the lines of Esoteric/Evoken/Ahab/Astral Sleep, in other words a grandiose and ultra heavy world of abysmal dismay and utter hopelessness coming at you from within the catacombs of suffering. The ultimate in heavy is here and not just present in sound, but in feeling as well. The experience created here lies somewhere between the epic, poetic and gripping ones created by the likes of Solitude Aeturnus and an Edgar Allen Poe tale. Highly recommended to fans of: Hallowed Butchery, Ahab, Esoteric, Evoken, Skepticism, My Dying Bride, Officum Triste, and label mates Astral Sleep. This stuff is suffocating!!!!!

Well I have to say when I saw their cover artwork I was like this might be interesting so I placed the CD in my player and started to listen. It took me to places I never thought about and made me feel emotions that were truly sad and full of power. I thought everything was well written and put together as such to give the listener a true experiance into a journey of sadness and darkness. I was very impressed with the mix of all the instruments and the vocals. In short a very powerful and emotional journey when listening to "Shadows Over the Cosmos".
