After listening to Ukranian Black Metal band Darktrance’s debut full length Ghosts In The Shells a few times, I was somehow reminded of a Bible verse that I learned when I was about nine or ten years old in Sunday School. I don’t remember the actual verse, but it it went along the lines of "Being undecided of God’s existence angers Him more than if you don’t believe in Him or if you worship the devil". Now, I probably completely butchered that line of scripture, but the same idea roughly applies to Darktrance. Typically the Black Metal I listen to falls into one of two camps: BM that’s a cacophony of shrieks, blastbeats, and evil tremolo riffing that is a true throwback to the oldschool, and highly inventive BM that takes the genre in new, interesting, unthought of directions that will influence future Black Metal bands. Darktrance, however, falls uncomfortably in-between the two, and tries to blend the former of these two styles with obscure synths and electronics. And dear God, it’s messy.

Solitude Productions, Darktrance’s label, describes their sound as “Powerful, with apocalyptic atmosphere and original use of electronics that will catch the fancy of all Extreme Black Metal lovers”. I must make a few corrections here. As Darktrance is a Depressive Black Metal band, the sound is hardly “Powerful” at all, and is mostly a jumbled mix of oddly placed synthesizer usage, computerized drums, and overbearing vocals that are far too loud in the mix. Also, as a big fan of Extreme Black Metal (I’m one of the biggest defenders of Bal-Sagoth and Dimmu Borgir), this band certainly does not catch my fancy. In fact, most of it is downright off-putting.

The music may be fairly uninteresting, but there are a few high points on Ghosts In The Shells where the shots at originality are aimed true and actually hit their mark, particularly in the riffs department. Some tracks, like Delusional Dreaming, feature some interesting tempo changes in time signatures that actually make for some fairly memorable moments, as Darktrance will occasionally incorporate some traditional lead guitar riffs that remarkably don’t seem too out of place. A small portion of the synth usage is actually entertaining, too, whenever the band isn’t trying to create a gloomy atmosphere by relying solely on the electronics alone. Black Sun comes to mind, which features a simple but haunting clean guitar riff accompanied by melodic keys in the intro and interesting synth use at the core that’s borderline symphonic sounding. The only other stand-out track is God Of Time, as it strays fairly close into Thrash territory with palm-muted tremolo riffs and double time snare hits.

Though these two songs are on the right track, and a few of the other songs feature a moment or two that stick in your head after you’re finished listening, Ghosts In The Shells as a whole really isn’t worth your time or money. Perhaps if Darktrance can implement the electronic elements to better use as they show they are very capable of on Black Sun, or build upon the Thrash element found on God Of Time, and maybe even hire a real drummer as the drum machine makes the music sound very artificial as a whole, the band may yet put out a good or great record in the future. But Ghosts In The Shells, though stylish in parts, will not warrant a recommendation from me. Next, please!

“Ghosts In The Shells” is the 2008 debut from Ukrainian one-man band Darktrance. And by one-man band I mean sole member Deimos(otherwise known as Dmitry Gubsky) handles vocal, instruments and production. That’s a big job for a debut and he comes out aces. While this gets filed under the Black Metal moniker it’s not your Mayhem, Mutiilation, Beherit black metal. This leans more towards Blut Aus Nord, Enslaved and Agalloch vein.
Our aural lesson begins with “Long Dark Heath”, which starts us off with depressive black metal with symphonic touches. “Delusional Dreaming” hits us with extreme guttural vocals, lots of time changes and double bass. Doom atmospheres enhance the furiously fast moments. “Rain Of Sorrow” starts out as a funeral dirge piece, which slides effortlessly into a dissonant harmony of guitars. This ensues into a blast beat of otherworldly screeching vocals. “Between Two Worlds” has a compelling ambient beginning. An interesting track, it has an abstract, shadowy aura punctuated by moments of funeral doom. “God Of Time” is superb death metal period.

Technical guitar work, brutal drumming, distorted vocals and interesting time changes are all found within. “Black Sun” may begin with a gentle guitar melody and whispered vocals, but from therein are many additions. A keyboard harmony adds a classical effect, screeching vocals at the chorus rouse us from any boredom. A surprising piano interlude interrupts the piece sublimely. The title track “Ghosts In The Shells” has an opener that brings Lycia to mind. It’s an appealing combination of gothic postmodern rock with doom metal. Vocals on this track sound specifically malefic and grim. “Humans’ Devilry” is all pounding drums and down tuned guitars. This mutates into a black metal buzz saw of rhythm guitars. Majestic and mysterious sounding, it features a striking guitar solo to boot. “Prison Inside Us” rounds out the cd. An epic and esoteric piece of music, keyboards are used to a dirge-like effect. Funeral doom and death metal unite with a gloomy finale.

So what conclusions can we come to? Is it any good? Yes without a doubt. From the production to songwriting, dedication and musical ability, it’s all there. Anyone who is a fan of Enslaved or Agalloch will find this a rewarding listen. But to add to that anyone who appreciates music done well, without the restrictions of labels, would enjoy this too. Take a chance and give it a listen. What is found inside isn’t a carbon copy of a lot of black metal bands nowadays. It’s black metal that touches on influences of doom and funeral metal, and a little death metal thrown in too. Together it works and it’s a tough act to follow, but no doubt Deimos will be up for the challenge.

Индустриальные тона (“Delusional Dreaming”, “God Of Time”), почти симфонические клавишные пассажи (“Black Sun”), вполне традиционный среднетемповый блэк-металлический стафф (“Human’s Devilry”)… «We are rotting, bleeding, dying / We are suffering race…

Прослушивание "Ghosts In The Shells" - это истязание души, но не слуха. Long Dark Heath, Rain Of Sorrow и пиковая композиция Ghosts In The Shells, просто убивающая своей размеренностью. (Prison Inside Us)...

I tried to like this, I really did, but it is just a relentlessly boring album. Darktrance is really just one guy playing Black metal so generic it is hard to really categorize. The guitar sound is weak, and the riffs are a mix of blurry tremolo and a chunkier, almost groov-ish approach. He tries to inject some interest with some slower passages using acoustic guitarwork and some electronic sounds, but this only helps in spots. Vocals are a very generic rasp that does not rise above the rest of the proceedings. After several listens I just find it very hard to pay attention to this album, as it is just kind of there. Nothing makes you want to turn it off, but there is nothing awesome about it either. Faceless.

I guess Ukrainian guys are loners. Like Raventale, Darktrance is a one man project. Unlike Raventale, Darktrance is a much more intense, aggressive and nasty affair. Mastermind Deimos (Dmitry Gubsky to his friends) has created Ghosts in the Shells (2008), a debut that mixes the mechanized sounds of a drum machine, with the hysterical screams of a hades dweller and the guitars of an undecided player who doesn’t know whether to shred, destroy or be subtle. The best example of aural confusion I’ve heard is “Black Sun”, where the song goes from average black metal, to cheap orchestration to a piano solo that’s worth a couple of chuckles and back to black metal. The puzzling aspect of Darktrance is evident, there are extremes at play here, and they aren’t working together. Evidently, Deimos is an ambitious man and is yet to find the limits of his talents and creativity
