GRIMFAITH se forme en 2002 à Kyyiv en Ukraine. Le groupe attend 2005 pour nous présenter une première démo, « Sex In Heaven » puis 2008 pour un premier album, « Grime ». Un EP fera suite à ces deux sorties en 2011, « Hearts and Engines ». C’est aujourd’hui en 2013 que le groupe nous revient avec un album aux fortes influences gothiques « Preacher Creature ». Ce nouvel album bénéficie d’une très bonne production ce qui déjà marque de très bons points. Le son est puissant avec des guitares et une batterie très en avant. Le son naturel de la batterie a laissé sa place à quelque chose de plus triggé mais il en résulte une certaine clarté. S’il y a bien une influence doom dans la musique, cela ne se retranscrit pas vraiment dans le son du groupe. Musicalement, GRIMFAITH puise ses influences dans des sources relativement diverses. On pourrait d’ailleurs citer DEPECHE MODE. Le chant et la voix ont de quoi nous y faire penser, notamment sur des morceaux tels que « Dead In Soho ». Cependant, le chant ne se limite pas à ça. On retrouve parfois quelques intonations plus death et parfois quelque chose qui pourrait faire penser au chant de VULTURE INDUSTRIES avec un petit quelque chose de MOONSPELL, spécialement sur « Radioactive Rain ». Ce titre a retenu particulièrement mon attention pour ses aspects plus déstructurés que d’autres morceaux. Si certains titres sont un peu trop taillés dans un format simple, celui-ci a un grand intérêt pour son ambiance plus sombre et ses sonorités moins évidentes. En effet, GRIMFAITH ne brille pas forcément pour son originalité et cela sent parfois le déjà entendu. Cependant, les morceaux sont bien construits et on n’est pas à l’abri de quelques surprises à l’intérieur de certains titres, « My Cruelty », « E.V.O – 3 : Cyberlover », « Aberraion »… Malgré un album abouti, on a tout de même le sentiment à l’écoute de ce disque que GRIMFAITH se cherche encore. Les idées fourmillent mais il manque un petit quelque chose au propos pour réellement nous faire chavirer. Il faudra tout de même suivre ce groupe de prêt car il ne serait pas étonnant de se faire surprendre sur d’autres sorties.

Grimfaith is another act from Kiev (Ukraine/Eastern Europe) who's signed to Russian based BadMoodMan Music label. This gathering has been together for more than 12 years now, and Preacher Creature is their second full-length release.

There's this one particular thing that impressed me even prior to listening to their music; it is a cover artwork. It is an amazing artwork both in the front and behind, as well inside the booklet. I like the dark themes (clash of orthodox icons and some cyber-fetishism) illustrations and this cool logo. It kind of adds an extra dimension to their overall image and the atmosphere around this opus. Meanwhile, the music itself will always be at the centre of my attention as no matter how beautiful and professional artwork looks, it can't carry the whole album, right?!

Preacher Creature is the title for this latest offering by this Ukrainian act that's playing melodic doom/death and gothic music. The album is unfortunately a bit chaotic and without a clear vision. The sound is not as captivating as the atmosphere and the aforementioned artwork, which is kind of a shame. There's this heavy usage of keyboards, which is partly understandable having in mind that we are dealing here with mainly doom music, however it tends to get too much and almost boring.

While listening to this material for second time I felt like there're no new revelations offered, no new unveiled things that needs to get heard. Even their vocalist sounds like one who's trying too hard to pull off the best vocal performance possible, but hardly succeed in doing so. Lyrics are in English, which is for the most time a good thing, but on this one the Russian accent is too obvious and almost too much. Lyrical content is mainly about the emotions, feelings of murderers and so-called Cyber-fetishism.

There're no particular songs off the record that I find better than the others, but I noticed one funny thing; these guys recorded a cover of a Mick Jagger tune called "God Gave Me..."?!

Instrumentally, despite of the heavy usage of keys, I think they're doing a decent job, as one can hear that we are dealing here with dedicated and trained professionals. Thus, one can hear some nice and robust guitar parts, dynamic drumming and the inclusion of other interesting (non) metal instruments. Generally, the production is good, even though I prefer a bit more raw and unpolished sounds.

There's not much left for me to say other than to urge any fan of the genre to give it a try. Esp. recommended for those into The Sisters of Mercy, Moregrim, Alcest, Draconian and similar acts. Meanwhile, your journey can begin already here

É inegável a importância do grupo português Moonspell para cena do Gothic Metal, e grande parte dessa importância é atribuída ao estilo vocal de Fernando Ribeiro, um verdadeiro mestre do gênero. Percebemos muitos grupos novos tentando traçar os mesmos caminhos deste gigante grupo que é o Moonspell, mas a verdade é que uma tarefa bastante difícil, obviamente. E é baseado nas linhas sonoras dos portugueses que os ucranianos do Grimfaith apostam para fazer um som de qualidade, e conseguem bem… Ou quase.

Tendo iniciado suas atividades em 2002, o Grimfaith lançou em 2013, seu segundo trabalho, intitulado de: Preacher Creature. Pois bem, intercalando o som entre um Gothic Metal e alguns traços de Suomi e Doom Metal a banda se sai muito bem até a sexta canção do álbum. De verdade, o grupo é matador em suas 6 primeira músicas, com destaque para, “Saint-Demonic Smile Or Sex In Heaven” que é a perfeita amostra de qualidade do grupo em todos os gêneros melancólicos que abordam, sobrando até espaço para blast beats no final da música. Os vocais de Moregrim são sensacionais, e devo ser justo e frisar que, Fernando Ribeiro não é a única influência do ucraniano, pois é evidente a similaridade vocal com, Ville Vallo e Ville Laihiala (H.I.M e Sentenced respectivamente).

Infelizmente, como já mencionei, as outra metade do álbum não é tão brilhante. As canções são mais simples, e não chamam a atenção. Talvez tenha faltado a criatividade. Tanto é que colocaram um até um cover de Mick Jagger no meio do cd (God Gave Me) o que me desagradou bastante aliás, apesar de ser a canção que mais lembra Ville Laihiala nos vocais.

Aconselho a ouvir sem compromissos este álbum, pois quanto mais chances você dá a ele, mais ele vai lhe agradando, ou desagradando no meu caso. Mas vale a pena dar uma chance à esta banda que pode ter algo mais produtivo num futuro próximo.

В последнее время издающая политика российского лейбла Solitude Productions, а вернее его подразделения BadMoodMan Music (что в принципе одно и то же) вызывает не мелкое удивление. Сначала они выпускают black metal группу ZGARD, а теперь вот ещё gothic metal команду GRIMFAITH у себя подписали. Такими темпами дальше пойдут группы в стиле Grindcore или Eurodance (кстати, насчёт последнего я, совсем, не буду против). Однако, вернемся к телу, то бишь к делу. Новый альбом от киевлян пришлось ждать аж целых 5 лет. За это время в группе сменился состав, менеджмент, лейбл, имидж, лого, да и музыка несколько претерпела изменения. О былом "Grime" (2008) может напомнить разве что только новая версия "Saint-Demonic Smile or Sex in Heaven" с дебютника, которую музыканты перезаписали специально для этого релиза. Уж не знаю, зачем было это делать, с учетом того, что оригинальная версия звучит все равно лучше. В остальном же, диск производит двоякое впечатление. Все главные хиты ("Aberration", "E.V.O. - 3: Cyberlover", "Flower and the Bone") были записаны еще в старом составе и были доступны для прослушивания ещё год назад, а новые песни ("Radioactive Rain", "My Cruelty", After a Sin", "Preacher Creature") гораздо слабее и не вызывают практически никаких эмоций. Основной проблемой коллектива по-прежнему является слабый вокал фронтмена (а теперь ещё и слабая ритм-секция, если сравнивать с прошлым релизом). Ну и наконец, киберпанковое оформление буклета как-то совсем не вяжется с музыкой этого коллектива. И уж совсем интересно, что эта группа преподнесет нам в следующий раз на своём новом альбоме, если конечно будет таковой, в чём я лично очень сомневаюсь.

По понятным причинам каждая из молодых команд, играющих в готическом ключе, всей душой желают заработать лавры своих кумиров: Draconian, Saturnus, на худой конец Within Temptation. Правда, обычно метод достижения известности выбирается самый простой и прямой - клонирование. Не нужно быть семи пядей во лбу, чтобы понять, что такие команды находятся в самой нижней цепи иерархической цепочки. Но это удел бесталанных команд, другие вполне могут занять теплое местечко, откуда можно будет вырваться на мировую сцену. Украинцам Grimfaith такое вполне по плечу.
К моему облегчению, музыкальные корни коллектива берут начало в абсолютно противоположной области жанра, а именно, в творчестве Sister Of Mercy и Christian Death, поэтому забудьте про меланхолию и романтику. Завоевывать ваше сердце украинцы будут с помощью бодрого готик-металл с доброй примесью рока, хотя и начинали они как клоны Draconian. Не лишенные, однако, таланта, который явственно прослеживался на дебютнике "Grimes", музыкантам требовалось еще немного времени, чтобы найти собственный узнаваемый звук, к их чести - они это сделали. Чистоголосый вокал, редкий гроул, выверенный саунд, разнообразие, запись европейского качества - все это входит в арсенал Grimfaith. Но главное оружие украинцев - это хиты, музыканты обладают редким чутьем на запоминающиеся мелодии. "Preacher Creatures" просто под завязку набит ими; парни не допустили ни одной промашки, все мелодии быстро врезаются в память, а найти хоть одну ошибку не представляется возможным и, честно говоря, не сильно хочется их искать.
Grimfaith ожидает светлое будущее, об этом говорит гостевоое участие Лизы Йохансон, которая явно не участвует где попало. Так что, можно утверждать, что свое "окно в Европу" команда пробила. Жаль, что коллектив приобрел большую известность в Европе, чем в нашей стране. Большая несправедливость.
