The HANORMALE project conceives the work in a logic that's diametrically opposed to the modus operandi of any musician, starting from rhythmic sequences fixed with a spirit of improvisation, to which musical parts, arrangements, voices and effects have been added. The album is introduced by the first track that deviates from the compositional method of the work, as a tribute to TWIN PEAKS and as a glue with the previous unmissable album. Arcanus Incubus, creator and coordinator of the ensemble, as well as the main author of the work, begins the work pushing Mox Cristadoro (MonumentuM - Christadoro) to create rhythmic drawings, freely inspired by the reading of terms randomly extrapolated from the Italian language dictionary, divided into syllables and phonetically transformed into scans impressed on the elements of a drums. The album sees CEREMONY at the height of their creative output, as the always-evolving Rohnert Park quintet take various influences from post punk and rock to create one of the summer's most compelling and infectious records. "In the Spirit World Now" is full of layered sonic fury and anxiety, each song building up to a point and then descending down through a militant, catchy hook. “Turn Away the Bad Thing” sets the tone, guitars climbing around the driving bass line, as Ross Farrar sings, “It’s getting harder for me to be alright/Eyes adjusting to the dark/The momentum of all these last resorts built inside of me.” Songs like “Presaging the End” and “Calming Water” feel romantic and distressed, while “Further I Was” and “Years of Love” are driven by Farrar’s rebellious energy as he repeats the hook with a deadpan realness. “Years of love can be forgotten/In the hatred of a day.” But the true stand-out is the title track, “In the Spirit World Now”, a haunting pop gem with a sticky chorus and lead synth riff that plants itself in your head as Farrar chants the track’s name over and over like a mantra. “In the Spirit World Now" is a sort of nebulous and ectoplasmic place where things may not be quite what they seem,” he says. “It means sh*t is about to get weird.” The album marks a milestone for this Northern California punk outfit who have stayed true to themselves as songwriters throughout massive sonic growth throughout their storied career.

But lest one think "catchy" means "soft", think again: these Chicago miscreants are ever committed to horror in the most classic sense, just like aesthetic forebears Grave, Master, Benediction, Obituary, Cianide, Malevolent Creation and, of course, the Floridian masters Death and Massacre. Theirs is a timeless ilk of bludgeoning Death Metal that's stuffed with assorted tempos that go from relentless eruptions of savagery, to torturous and doomed-out passages replete with morbid harmonies, and through mid-paced onslaughts of sheer heaviness, influenced by the likes of Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Monstrosity, Immolation, Brutality, Suffocation, Morpheus Descends and Incantation. Salaciously titled "Drowned in Gangrenous Blood", Vultur's sophomore strike sees them sticking to that crushing course, and indeed drowning the hapless listener in gangrenous blood! No compromise, no quarter, no progression: "Drowned in Gangrenous Blood" is 100% undiluted Death Metal spawned from the most righteous of eras, the very beginning of the 90's. Even down to its bassy, shit-thick production -courtesy of Haris Vougiantzis, of Embrace Of Thorns fame, who also handles the mixing & mastering here- Vultur's 2nd album reeks of totally thorough authenticity. Its songwriting is creepy, lurking and most definitely sick, spewed by diseased minds who live for this. And it's also further proof that Greece's Death Metal underground is criminally unsung, but soon shall devour unbelievers... Hailing from the rustbelt Metal hotbed of Cleveland, Kurnugia was founded by ex-members of Decrepit, Nunslaughter, Embalmer, December Wolves and Delusion. Not surprisingly, this assembly of seasoned underground veterans is heavily influenced by the classic Death Metal of the early 90's, and that's exactly what Kurnugia aim for: to go back right to the roots of the genre and pay homage to the deeds of old, unaware of gimmicks, trends and mindless experimentation. No more, and definitely no less! Kurnugia delivered their debut EP, "Tribulations of the Abyss", in 2013 and then followed it with another EP, "Condemned to Obscurity", in 2016. All too teasing have been these short-length assaults, but at last arrives Kurnugia's debut album! Aptly titled, "Forlorn and Forsaken" is ancient aural debauchery, delivered with evil intent, rotting and heinous. Fittingly, this full-length encapsulates everything Kurnugia have stood for to date: crushing riffery, divebombing solos and tight tank-treads of rhythm, all delivered with swift simplicity of design, but upratcheting the production to a clear and cutting devastation. Well-produced but not "too well-produced", "Forlorn and Forsaken" still seeps with a primordial heaviness rooted in classic Death Metal songcraft, nodding to (but not ripping off) the seminal works of Immolation, Grave, Incantation, Autopsy, Entombed, Cianide, Morbid Angel, Dismember, Death, Unleashed, Deicide and Benediction. And of course, this classicism is reflected in Mark Cooper's attention-grabbing cover art as well! You can't teach old dogs new tricks, the cliche goes, but you can let those dogs do what they do best: proudly stick to the early 90's traditions of Death Metal. The highly anticipated 2nd full-length of this Chilean band. Hailing from the city of Valparaíso, Soulrot was formed by guitar player JL Olmos (Betrayed, ex-Micosis, ex-Gangrenous) circa 1993-1994 but was put to rest due to JL being involved in several other projects at the time. It wasn't until 2013 that JL joined bass player/vocalist JH Wilschrey (Sadistic Murder, Acero Letal) and they both resuscitated Soulrot, manifesting their unquestionable inclination towards the Death Metal of yore. This glorious, gangrenous resurrection resulted in the "Horrors from Beyond" demo in 2014 and the "Revelations" EP two years later. However, come 2017 did Soulrot finally released their first full-length, "Nameless Hideous Manifestations", through Death-Metal-of-yore stronghold Memento Mori. Bolstered by the addition of Daniel Fredes (Sadistic Murder) on drums, Soulrot stuck to their guns -a lyrical inclination toward H.P. Lovecraft's cosmogony and the preternatural, and musically inspired by old acts such as Nihilist/Entombed, Carnage, Autopsy, Grave, Necrony, Demigod, Traumatic, Carcass, Nirvana 2002 and Asphyx among others- but here exhibited a bulldozing sense of purpose, a crush-at-all-costs momentum teleported from 1992. And that bulldozer continues its crush unabated with Soulrot's second album, "Victims of Spiritual Warfare". Utterly gutsfucked as the previous album was, "Victims of Spiritual Warfare" sees Soulrot upping the urgency and delivering a tone literally worth dying for -if the teleportation stopped at '92 for "Nameless Hideous Manifestations", then this one's going no further than 1991! Soulrot somehow pull off the trick of being both rawer and more refined here, their songcraft broadening its scope -more patience, more doom, more crush- whilst tastefully unloading quick-hitting bursts of blistering Grindcore, altogether still sounding like the same band. But let it be known that this is still classic Death fucken Metal, same as it ever was, and always will be with Soulrot. Unbelievers will continue to roll their eyes at the familiarity, but just like they did on their debut album, with "Victims of Spiritual Warfare" do Soulrot utterly convince with their authenticity and passion. If you don't "get it", then you don't know Death Metal! Graced with stark cover artwork by Cesar Valladares and another molten mastering job by the esteemed Javier Felez at Moontower Studios, "Victims of Spiritual Warfare" could very well be their Indecent and Obscene, You'll Never See..., or even Harmony Corruption!

The crushing debut full-length by this Spanish band. Proscrito was born from the ashes of the sloppier incarnation known as Calvario in 2016, paying homage to the too-doomed-to-be-dead/too-dead-to-be-doomed music of such acts as Cianide, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Necro Schizma, Asphyx, Autopsy, Paradise Lost, Winter, Samael and Goatlord, crafting slow and churning tracks that were to be (not really) perfected with the band's debut EP, "El Calvario", in 2017: a release filled with an all-encompassing passion for decay and rottenness, from the penitent and flagellant opening track "Via Crucis" to the closing instrumental mantra that is "Puteado," pounding caveman percussion, thundering bass, and wah-soloing frenziness in between. After three days of morbid delirium at Moontower Studios (Ataraxy, Graveyard, Oniricous, Teitanblood), once again under Javier Felez's supervision, Proscrito's follow-up to the debut EP took form with some more echoes to the days of yore, as a full-length frontal assault titled "Llagas y Estigmas" ("Sores and Stigmata"), featuring 5 disgruntled litanies of blood, sweat and no-tears imagery reminiscent of Robert E. Howard and Cormac McCarthy, muscular riffage, vomit and mucus. Tracks like "Marcado por la Pezuña," "Tronos de Oprobio" or their (scato)logical outcome "Pantalgia" truly persist with that tradition of primitiveness, putting the stress both in the Death and the Metal, for Doom has always been the band's destiny, its powers and wisdom. Any way you describe it, the dense and sulfurous rumble this Spanish power trio creates can cause tectonic shifts as ably as it can rot your soul. There's an almost uncomfortably carefree, laissez faire approach to Proscrito's ritualistic plod, as if the band is indifferently acting as a conduit for supernatural frequencies only they can sense. It's not often that Memento Mori dips its toes into the doomier end of Death Metal as of lately, but when it does, be fucking sure that it's for good reason! And indeed, "Llagas y Estigmas" is one badass good reason!

Второй альбом ирландской группы Superstatic, собранной Рустамом, лидером Rakoth и Umbral Presence (также являлся концертным бас-гитаристом Cruachan). Название проекта является отсылкой к дебютному альбому Rakoth «Superstatic Equilibrium», но на этот раз Рустам обратился к жанру doom death metal. На «Glimmering Veil» музыка начала тяготеть больше к funeral doom metal, стала более мрачной и сложной, с элементами horror. В то же время, тексты основаны на произведениях Харлана Эллисона, Вильгельма Гауффа, Стивена Кинга, Артура Мэчена, а также компьютерных играх Morrowind и System Shock 2, что делает прослушивание «Glimmering Veil» ещё более интересным и непредсказуемым.
Гитарные партии гитары исполнил Сергей Лазарь (Аркона, Rossomahaar), который также смикшировал альбом. Мастеринг альбома выполнил Том Вальц (известный по работе с Venom, Annihilator, Dopethrone и многими другими).

At that time, I sought to compose more straightforward material within the strict framework of the BM style and rejected any experiments. But inspiration cannot be controlled. An inexplicable obsession got out of control and forced to create nine songs that were completely unlike on my past (and future) works. In 2012 these experiments with sound seemed to me too bold and I decided to bury this recording. Several songs were re-recorded and released on other albums, and some tracks completely disappeared into the shadows. Then I did not know that this album will begin the transformation from Black Metal to Black Rock. My musical roots won and helped create a different style. The perception of reality has changed and reached a new level. Years later, I changed my opinion about this album,because it iscompletely harmonious and self-sufficient. Inspired by such recordings as Darkthrone - “Goatlord”, Blackdeath - “Bottomless Armageddon” (which got a new life after a while) and of course the legendary Bathory - “Blood on Ice”, I decided to release this album, fully preserving the sound of old time. That is how these songs should sound, they were like that at the very beginning, before all re-releases. Yes, this is an old album, which shows DO SKONU in a new way. The highly anticipated 2nd full-length by this Russian band. Hailing from Nizhny Novgorod and formed in February 2013, Wombripper have ever since leaned towards the Swedish school of Death Metal with raw, crunchy buzzsaw guitars and straightforward compositions. Highly influenced by Grave, Entombed and Dismember, their first demo, "Morbid Aberrations", was recorded and released in 2014, and the band shared the stage with some of the genre's milestones such as Necrophobic, Nominon and Fleshcrawl, and also newer underground acts such as Undergang, Nocturnal Witch, etc. After several lineup changes, the 4-track EP "Infected Tomb" was recorded and self-released by the band in 2017. That same year, Wombripper recorded their debut album, "From the Depths of Flesh", which was released in 2018 by different labels, such as Redefining Darkness Records (U.S.A.) and Grotesque Sounds (Russia). "From the Depths of Flesh" gained them lots of positive feedback from the media and old school Death Metal fans alike, as the album displayed some top-notch Swedeath, an aural massacre featuring plenty of catchy and morbid melodies, blazing solos and blasting devastation. Now scaled back to a 3-piece, Wombripper put the power in power-trio with their crushing second album, "Macabre Melodies". Ever aptly titled, "Macabre Melodies" is both macabre to the max as well as melodic -in a most macabre manner! Wombripper are nothing if not maniacs devoted to pure 90's Death Metal, and that vintage aspect rings proud and true here, adding to (but never subtracting from) the iron-clad foundation laid down by Dismember back then, keeping the guitars gutsfucking and incredibly tuneful, with hummable tunes you simply won't be able to get out of your head. But lest anyone linger under the assumption that "melodic" equates to some weakening aspect, fuck right off here: Wombripper are not named that for no reason, and "Macabre Melodies" encapsulates and then eclipses their no-less-righteous prior recordings, making for the band's apex to date and all without sacrificing an ounce of crush or credibility. The terrific 3rd full-length by this notable Melbourne based band. Borne out of the members desire to see a resurgence of a heavier, more dissonant style of Death Metal back in 2006, Ignivomous were among the first wave of bands to reignite interest in the genre in the first decade of this century. "Hieroglossia" preserves the core membership of the band present throughout its tenure -Sean Hinds (guitar), Chris Broadway (drums) and Jael Edwards (vocals)- and presents the recording debut of Lewis Fischer (Altars) on guitar and Chris Jordon (Inverloch, Eskhaton) on bass, both of whom have cemented the band's live assault for the previous few years in a campaign of high-profile shows in their native Australia. This lineup in its current form has secured and built upon the band's unrelentingly legacy, oozing raw, sinister Death Metal pushed a step further into the void, creating an album which synthesizes the bands influences with a definitive and individual vision. While projecting a murky and atmospheric take on the Death Metal template, the eight organic and primal songs on "Hieroglossia" avoid sacrificing the primacy of the riff for reverb-drenched formlessness, or songwriting in favour of dissonance for its own sake. Thematically, "Hieroglossia" continues Ignivomous' investigation into topics of philosophical pessimism, influenced by the works of Thomas Ligotti and E.M. Cioran, and gnostic concepts of the fallen and hostile nature of the material world, presented throughout with a literary sensibility which should be accustomed to those familiar with their previous output. Previously released on LP through Nuclear War Now! in November 2019, "Hieroglossia" was also released as a strictly limited tour edition digisleeve that was available for purchase during the band's European tour in late 2019. That digisleeve version did not include the official cover art and was roughly mastered. Memento Mori's version is presented in a regular jewel case, featuring the original cover art and layout by Stefan Thanneur, and a proper mastering work by James Plotkin (O.L.D., Khanate) at his own Plotkinworks Studio.

“Valor In Hatred” was an album I reviewed some time ago from this act from Finland. Their sound wasn’t typical Scandinavian, but much more American death metal orientated. Their new MCD hasn’t changed much. “Become Malignancy” is again an album that reminds you of especially Deicide. Also the vocals of Niko Anokas have a lot of comparison with Glen Benton. This new MCD contains 4 tracks with a clocking time of 20 minutes and is recommendable to all people who like music as I just described before.

After several highly acclaimed demos Finnish Total Devastation has released their first full-length. This six-piece has many gigs and years of training behind them and in the light of these facts they are more than ready to make their debut. But what kind of material Roadmap of Pain has? Well, many kinds. Although the band"s goal is to make very crushing and blasting stuff, there are lots of variation in these ten songs: modern metal stomping like Diablo, Death Metal, blastbeats and Neurosis-like doomy soundscapes, to name a few. And all this is covered with synths and samples, greeting from Apocalypse. I think that different people will like different elements in Roadmap of Pain and in my ears Total Devastation was at its best when delivering slow and desperate funeral marches like Production Peak which reminded me about Red Harvest. Also some rock"n"rolling songs - for example Left Hand of the Devil - were good, but too fast and grinding songs I found too "trendy": in my dictionary "fast" stands for "brutal" quite rarely. But Roadmap of Pain is not a bad debut, far from it. It has balls (especially Jaakko Heinonen"s vocals prove that!), groove and nice tricks like an acoustic/violin start of Prepare to Die and that"s why all friends of industrial-laden Death Metal should check this album. But before their next album Total Devastation should focus their attack more tighter. Now the pack is too wide.

A collection of brilliant demos from a Norwegian Underground act, in fact one of the most underrated bands of the mid and late 90s - Gravferd. Unfortunately they never got the chance to release their material on CD (at least not until now) so these three demos were only available on tape or CDr and all are sold out since years. However, it seems the band didn"t know how to create bad or average songs (or they didn"t dare release them like so many others) because the material on this collection is marvellous from the first to the last second and it"s 72 minutes! Sound-fetishists may stay away, the material has not been remastered and is still as raw and unpolished as it was released back then but fans of old Northern Black Metal will find it much to their liking!

Badly Drawn Boy"s new album is part of a trilogy called It"s What I"m Thinking and the subheading of the first album is Photographing Snowflakes. "I was having a drink one night with some friends and someone said "What do you think is the hardest job ever?"" explains Gough, "and to me it"s got to be photographing snowflakes. lt"s impossible. People do it but l"ve no idea how they do it." lt"s also an analogy for what Gough wants to achieve with this trilogy, grabbing those moments or songs that come from nowhere and capturing the moment. Photographing snowflakes. Penning the soundtrack to last year"s Caroline Aheme film The Fattest Man in Britain sparked a period of unprecedented creativity for Gough, resulting in a wealth of new material. Invigorated and inspired by the approach of artists like mid-period Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who would go into the studio to record an album when the songs were flowing, rather than when the music industry powers that be dictated to them, Gough decided the best way to capture this surge and give the songs the exposure they deserved was to release a trilogy of albums. "I"ve got such a wealth of ideas I want to work on," explains Gough. "And intrinsically, as a creative person, you don"t want to switch off the flow of ideas, because that"s what keeps you ticking."

They"re simply three friends who are obsessed with making each song heavier, more intense, more glorious, and just plain better than the last. Stereogum has said that the band"s "sledgehammer assault" is "inescapably awesome," and that they"ve become their "favorite underground locals." The return of Juliette Lewis, whose new album, ‘Terra Incognita,’ was produced by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta) and easily shifts from punky grooves ("All Is For God") to chiming guitar rock ("Fantasy Bar") and even includes a flashy pop song ("Uh Huh," which Lewis describes as her "make-out jam"). There"s a ton of variety in the vocal performances, too, which leap from growly and rich to vulnerable and subtle. "I wanted to make a record that has full flavor and spectrum. Not the same song 11 times," says Lewis. "Terra Incognita means unknown territory and I wanted – needed – to go there. Not everybody wants to. But I got no one to answer to, so why not feed the muse?"

It makes sense that the new album from The Lemonheads feels like a cool mix tape slipped to you by a music-obsessed friend anxious to turn you on to something new. VARSHONS was produced by Haynes, mixed by ex-Cornershop guru Anthony Saffrey, and features Dando along with Vess Ruhtenburg (bass) and Devon Ashley (drums). The collection is filled with strange bedfellows - from G.G. Allin to Texas troubadour Townes Van Zandt and garage rockers The Green Fuz. The Lemonheads make each track their own, with help from actress Liv Tyler, singing back up on Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” and Kate Moss, who sings over the dance groove of Arling & Cameron’s “Dirty Robot,” Also featured on lead guitar and backing vocals throughout most of the album is John Perry, on loan from The Only Ones. Filled with obscure nuggets, the tracks on VARSHONS cut a wide swath, jumping from early British psychedelic to Dutch electronica and like all good mix tapes, you never know what is coming next.
